US Navy told me no rings on flight status. Common sense told me no rings on board. My wife of 34 years understands.

i have not worn jewelry in years---first of all my good stuff was stolen from me while living on land--long story--i replaced those items and those were again stolen from me-
i have jewelry now--it is safe with my mom--i wear no adornments, nothing. is safer that way--not so many bandidos interested in my things..

I saw the title of this posting and thought... "ha ha, it almost sounds like he is talking about body piercings.... I wonder what he really means..?" And it turns out BODY PIERCINGS.

I've had two close-calls. Tailing a genoa sheet that got loose, caught my ring - iit sure seemed like it was going to take my finger. The other was during docking with a dockline that wrapped my finger and locked on the ring. I transfer my ring to my dogtag chain and request that all crew remove their rings.

Yes, the old double entendre.

Lot's of good stories about the perils of body jewelry including an honorable mention to Zeehag with a topic that's been addressed here before, dressing down while in a foreign (or heck, not so foreign) port to avoid banditos.

I've had kids, young men, and old men try and take the watch off my wrist and money out of my pocket (some are very creative), poverty is a terrible thing. None ever succeeded and with a few harsh words they left me alone - protected from additional harm I'm sure in no small part that I was a US serviceman - ok to pick-pocket but they don't want to go beyond that. I was even 'kidnapped' once in Olongapo, mildly so, taken back into the neighborhoods against my will by a jeepe driver. I knew what was up and refused to enter a house to 'get a letter to mail'. I think the world is an even more dangerous place now.

The old time sailors wore the gold earring so that in case they were lost at sea and their body ever washed ashore the value of the gold in the earring would pay for a Christian burial.

Assuming they were found by Christians.

I have had a few issues with wearing a ring, so I haven't had one for 30+ years. I know my place all the same.

I lost a few swimming in coldish water as my fingers would shrink a lot. I have caught them on a few things especially whilst at work and get shocked and the jolt would cause the arm to withdraw and invariably get caught on something. I gave up rings, watches and what not.

I had a co-worker get his ring between two posts of a welder and it melted the ring about his finger. Depending on what activities you do you just have to be aware of the hazards. The gloves are good advice with or without a ring. In fact some plants I visit prohibit rings, watches or any dangles as they can be safety hazards.

My ring is oversized and I remove it when I work. I have lanyard with the marina toilet key and my insurance card that I clip it on to avoid loosing it. (The lanyard usually stays on the hook and is not worn)

A coworker of mine arced some batteries and almost blew his fingers off.
