Just bought a used hunter 216 and am trying to figure out the rigging. Does anyone have pictures of topping lift on top of mast and on end of boom. We are novice sailors and are in need of a little help. Also, there is a boomkicker mounted on this boat - does that mean that I can eliminate the topping lift? Thanks! John

Congrats on the new boat, you'll love it! If the rain lets up today I'll be raising the mast and rigging the boat this afternoon. I'll take a few pics and send them along. I had some trouble rigging the boat for the first time too. The dealer had most of it set up wrong. Lind @ Hunter Composites was a big help over the phone. I'm going to be installing a boomkicker as well. I plan on keeping the topping lift in place and leaving it slack just in case.

ABSOLUTELY!!

Get rid of the topping lift, it's a useless hinderance to sailing. The boom kicker will do a great job of supporting the aft end of the boom. Way too many sailors sail with topping lifts attached to their booms not realizing that it affects sail shape.

...What Alan is referring to is that some skippers forget to take the topping lift off once the sail is up. It may look like the topping is loose but in fact it isn't, as witness the main getting caught up as it swings across on a tack. By releasing the topping left, you can use the traveler and boom vang to pull the boom down and thereby flatten the sail in a brisk wind.
