I am planning a trip down to Pickwick Landing State Park in a week or two and taking my grandkids and wife. Mid-March could mean anything!!!!! Last year in early april we had a nice trip and some people were even swimming. But on such a large lake I feel that we've been missing something. We will be leaving Wheeler lake and lock through Wilson lake and another lock through to Pickwick. Any suggestions??? We will probably spend a couple nights at the PLSP hotel so that the kids can swim in their indoor pool and watch some TV but that is about the extent of our planning. Definately some fishing at least while in Alabama water. But there must be some favorite anchorages on Pickwick.

I spent a week on Pickwick back in October (when the water was great for swimming. Sailing was great; found a nice anchorage southwest of Grand Harbor marina and one across the lake from the State Park in a protected creek. You should have fun. We are going the opposite direction down to Guntersville lake in early May. Any suggestions for good anchorages in your area?

I Stopped on Wilson in October

My wife and Grandson were with me and due to some family matters we didn't make it to Pickwick. The first inlet to the north after you leave Wheeler dam has a nice anchorage. You can also go past the marina on first creek and anchor. We haven't anchored out many times on Wheeler usually returning to the marina for the night. On Wilson we anchored in an inlet about four inlets up on the south shore. There is a pump house and a dock but no houses. Whenthe weather is supposed to get nasty we go into the side inlet to the east and tie the stern to a tree. If worried about bugs we anchor out in the main inlet. We have talked about going to Guntersville but it is a long motor. As it is hard to sail in the river. The Marina just before you lock through to Wilson is an OK place to stay if you like burgers and beer. It is on the north shore just before the bridge. Wheeler is a huge lake but most of it is too shallow or too narrow for sailing
