Hi Peggie,

I am adding a new & bigger waste tank on my Beneteau 36CC. I ordered your book which was full of great info. I followed your recommendation to purchase a tank from Ronco. Sheila at Ronco as been very helpful at finding the right tank.

I have questions concerning the discharge fitting. Should i have it installed on the side of the tank at it's lowest area or should i use a pick up tube inside the tank using a top discharge fitting? I know Sealand makes a pickup tube but can i make one myself? It seems to be such a simple system. I think that a pickup tube is better since there can be no leaks from the bottom of the tank.

thanks for your help,
François

If you have at least 5" clearance above the tank...

(You have to have at least that much)...You definitely want to put ALL the fittings, including the discharge, on the top of the tank. And if you're ordering a tank from Ronco, all you have to do is specify a top discharge fitting and a pickup tube...Ronco will supply your tank with the fitting on top AND the pickup tube to go into it.

Fwiw, the sbo.com online chandlery is a Ronco dealer....you can save a little money AND support this site if you order the tank from here instead of ordering it directly from Ronco.

Re: If you have at least 5" clearance above the tank...

Do i need 5'' clearance even if i use an elbow fitting? I am not sure that i have 5'' space available with the tank that i have chosen. I do not have many choices for the tank installation.
Thank you for the head's up on the online chandlery. I was planning on ordering other things from it. I will now ad the tank from Ronco.

I agree with Peggy. You need 5 inches. Yes with elbows. If you only have one spot, order a different tank. After all, nothing will ruin your day worse than breaking a pvc elbow on a full holding tank!!!

Thanks everyone for all your help. I could not find a tank that would give me the 5'' needed to do a proper installation. So, I've decided to go another way. I will be modifing the existing water tank to make it into a waste tank. It's where i wanted to install the new tank (I was going to chuck the water tank anyway so why not try to convert it). It's a poly tank which is at least 1/4 inch thick. This tank gives me 6 inches on top. I will make holes for the fittings and use the Uniseal system or Sealand system. Will let you know how it turns out.

how many gallons is the tank. 1/4" might not be heavy enough a wall thickness.

It's around 30 gallons. One of my friends has a 45 gal tank with the same thickness and he has never had any problems.
