Rough Coordinates

I hope you have a GPS. The rough coorodinates for PIB ( PUT IN BAY)is long. 82deg 49min lat. 41deg 39 min. the coordinates for cleveland are roughly long 81 deg 43 min lat 41 deg 30 min. My rough guess would be about 76 statute miles as the crow flies. Someone verify this!!! I think this would be a great trip coasting it through Vermillion, Huron, Lorain, then Cleveland. r.w.landau

I have a GPS

The distance is 51 statute miles according to the NOAA distance guide. I was just curious as to how long time-wise. I will be at Put-In-Bay on Saturday Night and wanted to try and make a show in Cleveland Sunday Night. Thought it might be fun to sail it if it doesn't prove too daunting and we wouldn't miss the show...was going to over-night in Cleveland and make our way back on Monday. Just an idea for the end of the season. Any suggestions for marinas in the downtown area would be great! Thanks! Griffin.

51 miles seems light .....

PIB to Huron is 24 miles, which leaves 27 miles to Cleveland. I know that PIB to Huron to Cleveland is not a straight line, but, intuitivly, it would seem to be a longer trip than 51 miles. Huron to Cleveland by car is about 45+ miles. Jeff

Assumptions

Griffin, I did rough calcuations based on 1 minute = 1 nautical mile to get the 76 miles. I know that this is true for latitude minutes. I know that I shouldn't have applied it to longitude but, I did not have a chart to scale it off. However I am thinking it has to be close to 60 miles. Is your GPS reading nautical miles or statute miles? 51 nautical is about 58 to 59 statute miles. To your other question. I would assume about 75% of your hull speed and no more. For a 25' to 27' boat I would guess an average of 4.5 knots or about 5 miles an hour. If you ever drop below this you will need to motor. That is about an 11 to 12 hour trip if you have no snags. Sounds like fun, Wish I had my boat in up there. r.w.landau

Thanks Guys!

I'll just have to wait for the weekend to program it into the GPS and see how it washes out. Thanks again! Griffin.
