Does anyone have a PHRF rating for a Hunter 36 (2006)? Ours has been given a rating of 166, which sounds low to me.

PHRF Rating

Did you provide a complete description of the boat to your local PHRF committee and receive a written rating? We race on the Chesapeake bay and can go on-line to a PHRF of the Chesapeake listing where we found a 150 rating for a Shoal Draft Hunter 36-2 with a roller furling 110 headsail. Comparatively, a typical masthead rigged Hunter 34 gets a 144 rating; our deep draft Hunter 28.5 is rated 174 non-spinnaker. Based only on that limited comparison and no description of your sails, keel or prop, 166 might be a gift.

Base of 145 was used

Yes, I was given an official PHRF rating (187 without spinnaker, 166 with asymmetrical spinnaker) that all started with a base of 145 (rather than 150). I'll be content with the final rating the boat was given, but it did make me wonder what would have happened if a base of 150 had been used instead of the 145. The rater here is a very fair fellow, I know.

Direct Question

So, what type of keel; what size headsail; furling or standard main sail; and fixed or folding two or three blade prop? Presumably if you want a better rating it is because you expect to race her somewhat serriously. "Faster" would be deep draft, 130 or larger headsail, large roach main with oversize battens and a folding or feathering prop. "slower" is anything else.

jveatch...

we have 4 Hunters that race in our club. Each as an official PRHF cert. The 35.5 carries a 141, one H34 carries a 144, the other a 153, and the 33.5 also carries a 153. It would appear that your rating is pretty close to what it should be, having given all the pertinent data correctly.
