Why does the 272 rate so much slower (approx 20 seconds) than the 27? From what I can gather it has excellent sailing qualities, wins its share of races, and can hold its own against other 27 footers (Catalina, Hunter, etc.) Is it really that much slower to justify such a high phrf number (226)?

The 272 is 26 ft. 11"and change (lenght makes a difference for PHRF) The 27 comes with a deeper draft (fin keel ) while the 272 has a wing keel. The 27 will outpoint the 272 every day. (PHRF takes the keel into consideration) just some observations

PHRF Ratings
Being as the 272 is a lighter boat with more sail area, you'd assume it was faster boat. But PHRF ratings are adjusted by how boats actually perform in local conditions (not just by measurements)so there must be something about the 272 that hurts it's overall performance on a racecourse. My guess would be that it's not boat speed but that the wing keel makes for more leeway and less VMG on the windward legs.
