I have a Pearson 26W My friend has an Erickson 25 Specs are Pearson loa 26'1" Disp 5200 lbs lwl 21.8 Beam 8' 8" draft 4' sail area 321 phrf 213 Ericson disp 5000 loa 25'4" lwl 21.9 beam 9'2" draft 4'9" sail area 334 phrf 234 Seems to me the ericson is lighter, should be stiffer with more draft, should be faster with more sail. What I dont understand is why I
have to give him 21 sec a mile anyone have any ideas on this

Working against the Ericson are: 1.Slightly less LWL, 2. Higher Displacement, 3. Lower Hull Speed (1/10 knot), and 4.Way smaller sail area which give it a lower SAD. Working for it are: 1. Smaller Beam

On balance the lower sail area and greater weight of the Ericson favor the Pearson.

The PHRF and other handicaps are/should be based on results provided over the years for a given boat. They can also be adjusted for local conditions. With that said, it is quite possible that even though the numbers imply the Ericson should be just as fast; the hull and keel configurations may very well favor the Pearson.

Remember; numbers/statistics are like bikinis . . they show a lot but not everything.

Two Different Ericsons

If you look at the site that Tom attached to his reply, you will see that there are 2 Ericson 25 boats (the Ericson 25 and the 25+). According to the figures from the calculator on that site, it appears that the 25 is slower than your Pearson, and that the 25+ is faster than your boat. Maybe the PHRF raters gave him the higher rating for the slower boat (in error)? Based on the specs you listed, it appears that he has the 25+ (faster of the two) boats.
Mistakes are made sometimes.

FWIW there are a lot of specs out on the net that have muddled the numbers together between the Ericson 25 and the 25+. They are completly two different designed boats. To tell the difference is very easy, the 25 has a centerboard and the 25+ has a fixed keel. You will find the 25 to have a phrf of 234 and the 25+ to be in the area of 204.

I have a close buddy who has a 1975 Pearson 26 and he kicks my butt on the straightaways, but I can out point him in windward legs. I also use alot of "Jedi mind tricks" on him to also beat him :)

Phrf Question This clears it up

Rob Hessnius pointed out that there were 2 ericson 25 models my friend has the Keel model
I was not aware that a Centerboard model existed. In my area where the water is deep and cold its mostly keels. the 204 phrf for the Keel model seems to be in line
