Snow?
I was just out sailing the other day and did not see any snow on the water. It was a little cool out there but I had the Sound to myself. The winds were light and the water had a little chop to it. The trip to Port Ludlow and back was great.

I went down to the boat yesterday.
Clear, sunny and dry. The docks were dry too. The beer I'd left in the cockpit to keep cool was even a little warm. But the saltwater was cooler. My watermaker was only putting out 30 gallons an hour.

15 degrees outside and I can still go out sailing
driving is a different story though. It becomes a case of the slowest driver is always in front. It took me 30 minutes to go 4 miles yesterday. The sun was shining, the roads were clear and dry but the two inches of snow on the side of the road was just too scary to the guy in front who wanted to go ten miles an hour or less. I think he was from somewhere back east - maybe Maryland? There are a few guys who like to dive this time of the year as the water is so much clearer. What is your weather like on the east coast?

I shoveled snow for 7 days to get a truck out
so I could go down to the boat and go sailing for 2 days last week. Hope to get a break in weather tommorrow so I can get a few days end of the week. We've actually had more rain this year than Seattle, unbelievable, if things keep up I might have to go north for a little sunshine. I live in the mountains while the boat is nice and warm at the coast (although very wet), think I got the wife convinced we NEED a bigger boat for a winter escape site.

with us too! It's been snowing like crazy up here for almost 2 weeks now! It's times like these I'm glad I don't live farther up the hill, the folks in Tahoe are getting hammered! 2-3 feet of snow to be shoveled is one thing, 10-12 is entirely another! At least it gives me a bit of time to do other things, 'cause going to work on a day like this is something I try to avoid. This morning I finally finished the revisions and additions to that boat schematic I've been working on for months, and I even finished the addendum and specifications page, so I'm pretty happy about that! I figure if I can't actually take the boat out, at least I can do some 'boat related' work instead! Now, granted Auto-Cadd will never be as fun as trimming a main sheet, but sometimes you just gotta take what you can get! ;D Anyhow, hopefully the snow plow will be coming by pretty soon so I can go to the store and post office. There's a couple of guys I promised to mail a copy of the schematic to and I'm getting low on beer! *cry Jeff

It snowed here in Houston. Next door neighbors, age 7 & 9, had never seen the stuff before. Melted by 11 AM. Was 70 DEG two days later. Let me see! Today it was 80F and partly cloudy. Love the Texas coast. Jon McClain

Let me know if I've got this right ... you guys on the west coast have snow in the mountains and still have a sailing season on the coast. What could be better? I have an inch of ice on my driveway, tree branches are falling down all over my yard from the weight of the ice and our boat is in storage until April. The skiing sucks, unless I drive up to Vermont, where it still isn't so great either (this year). What is it about New Jersey that so many people like (we're the most densly populated state)? I think I could be talked into a relocation!

I visited the boat yesterday and saw something that surprised me. The fairway between docks had about a half inch of ice! I wonder if using my boat as an ice breaker would void the insurance?

THis is great, I love to get on this board and read what is happening in other areas to other poeple and also envy a bit with still sailing in other areas and so on and so on. My boat is under cover on the hard and will be till early May. Today going to get up to 10C or 50F in your measurements. Tomorrow up to 11C then down to -10C by nightfall, but it will get rid of most of the snow. I think sometime about taking the boat in fall and going down the Intercoastal to Florida from here. I guess that would be through the Trent Canal and across Lake Ontario into the Hudson Canal is it? Anyway that is just dreaming, so I fill my time during these short days by doing some upgrading to the boat to make her look prettier in the summer (and more functional). You guys don't know a thing about cold.The wind chill factor is -42C in Calgary this morning. That's cold! I will, however, conceed you may know something about snow. We don't have anywhere near as much as some of you.

Reminds me of the time in Vietnam when I got a can of maple syrup. The old woman who worked cleaning and washing our clothes asked about the picture on the can. It was a picture of snow covered ground and maple trees with collection buckets hanging on them and a horsedrawn sleigh. I first tried to explain snow and she just laughed at me in disbelief. "You lie" Then I tried to explain maple syrup and she did not understand. She thought it was something like turpentine. I said no, it is sweet and you eat it and then she looked at me like I was crazy. I stuck my finger in the can, licked it and rubbed my stomach. She said "you die now!" and ran away. She would not ever taste it. Whenever I saw her after that, she would say "you - dinky dow" which I came to understand meant crazy. Probably not too far from the truth.

but I live in a desert and 15 straight days of rain & snow just scares us. Sun came out today & tommorrow I sail, supposed to be 65 (farenheit) I will think of those of you surrounded by cold and drink a cold one for you. Anyone seen the "Go Canadian Kit" ? Sunshine, 80 degrees, wind 15-18 kt out of the east. 42 boats started the 30th annual Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race on Wednesday afternoon. If the wind direction and speeds holds the fleet will have the wind to their backs as they begin making the turn west just south of Key Largo. This should be a fast ride. The fleet includes Carrera, an 81' R/P and the 76' Multihull, Patriot. 2 Transpac 52's, Rosebud and Sjambok are also part of the fleet. This race is the leader race to kick off Key West Race Week, which starts on Monday January 17th. Over 350 sailboats from all over the country and a few from the international community will sail and party all next week in Key West. This is one of the top international sailing regattas in the world and many of the top sailors in the country will be in town to sail and enjoy the great weather. You guys are all invited to come on down. All kidding aside. After 4 hurricanes last fall, this is the reason and the season we live here for.

several inches of snow have melted completely. 40+ knots of wind gusts as well. Tuesday we set the all time record for rain - in recorded history according to the TV. High temperature was a record today. Now the idiots who built their houses on the sides of mountains and in the flood plains start complaining because their houses are falling off the hillsides or flooding. Every year this phenomenon is a new discovery to some. Lets see, what could have caused this weather? Global warming? Ozone hole problems? I guess I haven't been driving the hummer enough. Time to remove the chains and snow plow bumper, put on the kook catcher, and take a drive to Seattle. Fill-er-up!

Patrick - you touched on something that hits a nerve with me. People that build houses on hillsides or floodplains (or hurricane prone areas) and then cry "whoa is me" when the mudslide/flood/big wind (that hits every year) takes out their property every couple years. And then the insurance companies have no problem spreading the cost of that mentality around to the conservative livin' rest of us. I mean come on. Why should the cost of marine insurance in the Puget Sound area increase because of severe losses in Florida due to (unfortunate, yet foreseeable and inevitable) severe weather that happens every year? Oh, that feels a little better.

Ya gotta just love itSunshine and earthquakes,mudslides, suntan oil and tidal waves, Rain and floods, cold and snow. Everyday is a new challenge, the plows just went by the house, put another log on the fire and time to read Latts & Atts. Toronto boat show this weekend and also the Buffalo Boat show we'll hit them both. winter is a time for the boat and the crew to rest and get pumped for the next season.

Around here,it is often said that is soooo cold that it would freeze the brass nuts off an iron monkey. Last week at -44 C, it was so cold that I saw an iron monkey looking for a welder. Science is truly wonderful because -40F = -40Cand we are all in sync. While shovelling snow last week, I thought I might like to try a hurricane and see which is worse. I'm sure my snow plow man waits down the street until I finish and then with glee goes by at fast speed and puts the snow back again. Keel hauling is too good for that guy (with our ice) But, not to worry summer is just 4 months away.. Cheers!
