Petrol v Diesel

Choosing a smaller vessel which I hope to purchase soon I am left with a dilema. Can't stand the smell of diesel in a confined space. Has any one experience of a 260 with outboard. What size engine would you suggest(6 to 7 Knots) and what is the largest size that will give me a reasonable reserve of power when the waves start to get big. Purchase is consistent on selling current 25 footer so it looks now as if it will be next season.

smelly diesel

I can't advise on engine size, but I have learned that diesel odor indicates a leak or spilled fuel (from purging or other maintenance). This can be avoided by fixing any leaks no mater how small, and catching any drips while working on the fuel system with an absorbant pad. Also, plain white vinegar will remove the diesel odor... just wipe it away.But I guess my confusion is about whether the boat comes in two versions, an inboard diesel one and an outboard gas (petrol on this side of the pond) version. I've heard of diesel outboards, but thought these were just museum pieces <g>.

Diesel smell

RichardI've had my 260 with the inboard diesel for over a year now. No diesel smell, and plenty of power from the 9 horsepower Yanmar. In fact I'm still on the first tank full of diesel fuel. I use my boat about 3-4 times a month here in Southern California, so I the fuel economy is fantastic. Go for the inboard, you wont be sorry.Dan

I/B vs O/B

Richard,I believe if you go with the fixed keel version H260 your only option is the 9HP diesel. (I could be wrong on that point).I have the H26 water ballast / swing keel model that I have a 9.9 HP Honda 4stroke outboard on. This motor has all the power I need even in high winds / waves.Depending on your circumstances, you may want to opt for the I/B. I like the water ballast model because trailering is much easier.Good luck, Jim Covey

I have a Honda 8hp four stroke on my H26 water ballist. Haven’t been lacking for power yet. I would prefer an inboard – but like you, I wouldn’t do so if there were any chance of diesel smell. I figured my next boat would have an inboard within a sealed (separate) motor compartment. (wonder how big of a boat that would be?)

Diesel Every time

RichardI would opt for a diesel every time - its safer - its more economical - and its mor efficient than an outboardObviously outboards are better suited to trailer sailers I have had two hunters over the past 3 years and never had diesel smells - this only normally happens when there is a problemHappy sailing
