Cracker Pete??

Is Cracker Pete what (who) you're refering to? If so he is an old Florida Cracker who, like the rest of us Crackers, is forever having to deal with that old war of northern agression. You Yankees call it the civil war... He had some, how shall I say it, legal difficulties and left Florida for the Bahamas where he opened up Cracker Pete's Pub.

Cracker P's

I believe you are taking about Cracker P's in the Abacos. Pete's Pub is further South where the dingy races take place.

What's going on in charlotte harbor and the surrounding area. I was coming down to port charlotte next week to see about starting the building of my house but they said not to come down because everything is pretty bad still. I am not really in a hurry any way the longer it takes to build is better for me. But I would like to see how the other houses in the community held up,so what do you think is it ok for us yankees to visit. nick

Nick, It's Still Pretty Bad

Port Charlotte and mostly Punta Gorda are still pretty bad shape. No power, phones, water, sewer, etc. They are fixing the traffic lights where there is power. You may have to stay in a hotel/motel in Sarasota or north. You might want to wait a couple more weeks before comming down unless you want to see all the destruction of Charley. Bill

Well, well, well. We now have power AND a flushing toilet. Can life possibly get any better????? The say cable will arrive in the next 2-3 months. We are getting a community "extreme makover", it hurts now but in a few years this area will be smokin hot. If I were you I'd stay away for a few more weeks at least and wait until next year to consider starting to build. We just now are starting to get power to the last areas as of today, street signs are all gone in both PG and PC. I've noticed some signs slowly being replaced and there are mountains of debree lining most roads on both sides. As for building a new home..... Yeah, hold your breath. A contractor will be right over. We are still waiting for our insurance adjuster to look at our house, getting a contractor is still a pipe dream, getting one we can trust will be the real trick in this show. By the way, when you do build, strongly consider a metal roof. Like them or hate them, nearly EVERY metal roof held up, the tile roofs caused most of our damage (we have a metal roof, our neighbors have tile). There is no doubt that the metal roof along with storm shutters and hurricane rated doors (including the garage door) saved our old home that was built in the early 60's. The new building codes work.... Okay, I'll step off my soap box now. For all of you who lost your homes my heart truly goes out to you, good luck. We will be stronger, Charlotte Harbor and Punta Gorda will be a better community thanx to Charley.
