My #1 peeve is it's all eye candy and I think I want it. Good thing I'm not obsessed like Capt. Jim Sharp.

The key to successful selling of brokerage is presentation of the boat clean and repaired before photos are taken. The owner needs to list all gear and note the year only if anything is added or replaced as new in 1996 is hogwash. As a former dealer, I made it a point that all boats would be cleaned up before brokerage to include repairs with a fee of actual expenses only to be covered without profit If I had to do that for the owner. A good broker will then take appropriate photos and post. If the owner wanted to list high, I advised advertising at the going rate. A couple of the major listings do require the broker to advise what the boat sold for which was a good tool to resource for what a boat is worth. If you are concerned about a broker, walk the dock and ask your fellow sailors who are good and bad brokers but also ask if they have any issues with that broker which could give a bad response to a good broker. There are also books on values but again folks get a cross the board as one is low and another too high.

As a broker, I never took in junk requiring all brokerage would be cleaned and repaired. Those boats never lasted so a good key is to ask around. As some would say a lousy presentation would be indicative of the brokerage house.

It's amazing what you can learn about the use of the boat by the choice of pictures. If 90% of the photos show the interior and berths, I'm guessing she's a dock queen that never got out of the slip. If there are a bunch of photos from other boats during a race, you can tell she's was both a racer (and had a popular crew). What I don't like is repetitive pictures -- trust me, I know what a V-berth looks like, I don't need four angles! Descriptions are often missing key points that would save me a call or visit -- type of keel, windlass, engine hours ...

So what does it mean when they show you four pictures of the head....

I like when the add's have missppelling's and grammer errors's it tell's me that the owner doe's not attend too detail's and it wood be a waist of time for me to sea the baot in person. my time is preshus and I dont want to loose a day looking at crappie boat.

I also like when they show pictures of their dogs and cats aboard. It is very honest of the seller to warn me that the boat will probably be smelly and hairy.

I've never met a Broker that I've liked... They are slimier than used car salesmen. I won't go into detail about how much I hate them because I am pretty sure there are forum rules against what I would say and the expletives I would choose... Lets just say if you wear loafers with no socks, a pastel polo shirt with a sweater tied over your shoulders, and Ray-bans propped on top of your head I will instantly dislike you and not trust you.

As far as boat ADs go, here is an easy and inexpensive tech tip. Get a GoPro camera... get one of the old models so you can buy it super cheap. The wide angle lens takes outstanding pictures of the interior, either way if you shoot a short video and take screen captures or just shoot stills (if it has a screen or not, just point it in the general direction).

Full disclosure is all I ask. Don't waste both of our time by not disclosing noteworthy problems. I'll either move on or be willing to discuss them further, but don't make me find out after I take the time to come out and see the boat.

There are good modifications and bad ones.

All I am saying is take the time to make the boat present well.
you are correct about the presentation of the boat, no matter if you are trying to sell it or show it off to family or friends.
and bad modifications are just that no matter how proud the craftsman is....

but I was replying to the part where you asked "What are your pet peeves?".... and I have plenty more, but I just dont have the time to write the book right now:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

One thing that really bugs me about ads for MOST things these days (case in point: looking at new sound equipment and not finding anything resembling specifications) is that they rarely post any important specifications. For instance, very few powerboat ads even MENTION the engine, which I would think would be a rather important factor in a powerboat. I've seen ads in CL that don't even mention the mfr, or some that don't even say if it's sail or power. No sail inventory. No mention of the engine. No mention of what kind of stove is in the galley (alcohol, propane, diesel...?)
As others have said, they try to sell "the lifestyle" which gives no information about the product.

To me the ideal ad to sell a boat would look like this... clean boat outside, clean boat inside, lovely lady in the right place, etc... This Hunter sold quickly... :)

I looked at a recent ad for a boat. I thought it was nice of the seller to have the "date of the photo" feature turned on so the date appeared in the photo. Photos were from 2003.
I follow the "crappy ad probably crappy boat" thought as others have expressed.

-That hunter video was professionally staged and it shows. the pillows are a nice touch, as it the running tv.

I had a friend tell me that he bought his 1st boat, when he brought his wife to look at a 25' runabout, and the broker had set the dinette table, for 4 and had a vase with flowers. Wife loved it, and a lifetime of boating followed.

Who cares about the engine, I want to know how many cup holders it has? LOL

Well that's a total Kemah Dock Queen for sure, but no doubt a quality video production. Full marks for facilitating a fast sale. Pretty sure the lovely lass had never been up there in the forpeak before that day. I'd bet on it. That's the romper room for pre-schoolers.

Jack... I have the similar boat and I'm 5'-9" and I and the admiral sleep in that romper room with plenty of space. We emulated that interior as you can see in the photos with Ultraleather. I had tried to find one in this condition with the similar interior colors (bright) but to no avail so we kept our Hunter and modernized it. Admiral loves it and it isn't a dock queen... We take her out every weekend when we have great weather. ;)

Leather...
Ultraleather is used on high end yachts, aircraft pilot seats, luxury home furnishings, etc... it is the premium leather alternative but is not the same as vinyl... looks and feels like 'calf' leather... very nice feel and non sweating... why it's used in aircraft pilot seats.
