My perkins TMD22 does not have a coolant overflow reservoir. I just replaced all the hoses, flushed and refilled the system. I get a fair amount of overflow dumping into the engine bay. Has anyone installed an overflow and will it work with the pressure cap on this header tank. I read that some caps are not designed for return.

Thanks, is that original? Mine looks like it never had one, the hose runs straight down.

Mine has an overflow tank too. It needs to have one so that the coolant can flow in and out of the engine as it changes temperature. If the hose dumps into the engine sump, then the engine will suck air back into the cooling loop as the engine cools. This can cause overheating due to loss of coolant.
Get an overflow tank with a bottom connection and mount it somewhere convenient above the heat exchanger.

Thanks Rich I see a few universal ones on Amazon, seems easy enough to install. I think I'll pickup a new pressure cap too- I like to replace it every 30 years -whether it needs it or not.

Be careful replacing the pressure cap. There are two different ones with different heights. Check your engine service manual to be sure you get the correct one. Or if you know that yours is the OEM, measure so that you get the correct one from Parts4Engines in the UK. They may also have a replacement overflow tank.

In your picture you posted from PartsforEngines.

Ebay or Amazon might sell OEM parts.

I've tried them in the past but I find Parts4Engines to be about the only source. Their prices and shipping are reasonable and they ship real fast. Also if you have an MD22 you have or will be replacing the exhaust elbow connector. They sell a stainless one that will hopefully will last a bit longer than the stock aluminum elbow which disintegrates after a few years.
