Perkins
Tim; I have a '94 Ben OC400 with a Perkins M-50, which I think is the same block as the -30, since the owners manual covers the M-30,-50,-80. Perkins has a long history of powering yachts all over the world and I guess the engine itself is pretty good, but I had some trouble with mine in Mexico. When I bought the boat, (brokerage) it had a beautiful set of twin Racors installed. I didn't know that the OEM fuel filter, a Perkins part and installed by Beneteau which was under and hidden by a big wire bundle, had begun to leak under the first owners stewardship. In Mexico I had fuel problems I couldn't solve myself. A mechanic traced the problem to a lift pump fouled by debris from the Racor installation. The leaking Perkins filter was the reason the Racors were installed in the first place. The Mexican mechanic put it back into the system. It was a huge mess. If you like, I'll send you a complete write-up I did, which is supposed to appear in Latitudes and Attitudes Magazine. The short answer is; get that Perkins filter out of the loop.
