Has anyone installed a pergo type floor for a cabin sole? I have a hunter 27 cherubini that I might want to add this to. Any experience or toughts appreciated.

Don't do it

Unless it's been changed recently the manufacturer recommends it not be used in a wet environment. A friend used it on his galley refurb on a 66' trawler. It got wet (frig leaked) and it immediately swelled and buckled.

Concur - don't do it!

We put Pergo down in our last condo. It took 3 three shipments from the factory to get one that was not warped by moisture. W were happy with the installation, but are convinced the product is much more sensitive to moisture than wood. David Lady Lillie

Think about ...

bamboo flooring. It doesn't have the same look but will hold up to anything,is very hard and you can get it prefinished. The pergo will go to pieces fast. Depending on the kind you get it's basicly pressed paper with a "picture" of wood on the face. We put a bamboo floor in a remodel we did and cut a peice of flooring and put it in water for three weeks or so and it did not change at all. Just a thought. Rob Morton S/V Euphoria

Garbage!

Our son put it in his HOME. Where the kids spilled a drink or the pups had an accident it warped, permenantly. I don't think people will buy the stuff much longer. It's a rip. He replaced it with tile last week.

I used it on the hull side of quarterberth

It was Pergo or Bruce brand. So far ( couple of years) its holding up. On the sole, never.

Big difference between Pergo and

Bruce flooring. Bruce is actual wood that ususally has a veneer over the top and is prefinished. Pergo is pressed with a picture of wood. Bruce would hold up better but I still would be wary of using it on the sole. Rob Morton

Fwiw...

There are synthetic flooring materials suitable for use on boats. On a flight a couple of years ago I happened to sit next to the president of a company that supplies it some of the high end powerboat builders, including Hatteras, Viking, Bertram and SeaRay. Unfortunately I lost his card...but I bet if you call any of those builders and ask 'em what they use, they'd tell you. I doubt if it's inexpensive, though.

Got it for my house

7 years ago and it hold very well(we have it for kitchen floor and haven't have any problem.) However, I still wouldn't use it in a boat. Properly installed, the water can't penetrate from surface into partical core to cause swelling. But in a boat water will certainly got to the edge of the flooring and cause problem.

Totally disagree Fred!

Fred: There are great differences in the quality of similar flooring products. We have a bamboo floor in our home and it is very resilient. There are some very high end boats that are using bamboo for their flooring so to say that it is 'Garbage' is really not true. While I would NOT recommend any flooring that is not designed for the marine/sailboat environment, bamboo is a high quality flooring material. Bamboo is NOT wood it is a grass product. When we were shopping for our floor we found the product for $2/ft and $5/ft. We also heard about some of these horror stories about the cheap stuff. My suggestion is to find what the marine mfg are using and use a similar product. They have hundreds of successful installation.

Whew! Steve it would really hurt if you disagreed

with me. I was talking about Pergo. I know nothing of bamboo flooring. Whew, again. :) And I edited the offending pronoun 'it'. Musta been watching too many ebay commercials.

Sorry Fred, misdirected!

Fred: I'm sorry, I mis-directed this towards you, but there are many different qualities of flooring. Even Pergo and the other brands offer different qualities within their product lines.

As I write this I'm looking at Pergo flooring at

my sons home. Some of it is still in place. :( It is so bad that it can't be removed or relocated without breaking it. Sawdust just crumbles.
