Many of us use roller furling to shorten sail or get rid of the headsail altogether. The other alternative is to change sails. If not done regularly, this can seem like a difficult and time consuming job. There are two types of headsail luff attachments, hanks and luff tape. Hanks are the original method of attachment. Changing headsails with hanks necessitates dropping and stowing the first sail before hanking on and hoisting the second. All of this takes precious time spend headless and with someone on the foredeck. Not a pleasant thing in a pitching seaway.Changing sails with a luff tape and head foil is much quicker and the second sail can be hoisted BEFORE the first is dropped. This means no loss of driving force of the sail during the operation. It also means the foredeck needs to spend less time forward. In Part 11 I'll go through the mechanics of the hoist and peel.
