I have looked and looked and I can not find what the limit is as per persons and gear weight for my 1989 wing keel catalina22. I have seen this on every power boat I have owned or been on but on the 2 sailboats I have had there is no such plate. Can someone point me in the right direction? Alan

When the water starts coming over

the rails, you may have it overloaded ;D Capacity plates are required for powerboats only, sailors are supposed to have more common sense than powerboaters and don't need the govornment to tell us when the boat is full. Tim

Capacity ratings

The capacity rating (5 people or 800lbs, for example) is the load carrying capacity when the boat is capsized and/or full of water. Small boats, including small sailboats, dinghies, and relatively smaller powerboats have flotation built in and will float when capsized. When you get up to the motoryacht size, they are the same as keel-type sailboats. When they are full of water (with some rare exceptions) they sink.

up to five

Just so know one is confused I sail with no more than 5 people in my boat but mostly 3. I was just wondering why our sail boats don't have a rating. Alan

Oh Joy, according to the sailing calculator

sinks one inch per 900 Lbs. So, since she currently floats about 6" above her stock WL, this means I can put 5400#'s on her safely? Not on your life. Talk about a sailing slug.

10%

I've always heard to keep the additional load( over normal crew and cargo) below 10% of the listed displacement in order to stay within design performance limits. So for a Cat 22; about 250 extra pounds?

For sailboats.....this is on the test

Number of people = vessel length (ft) X vessel width (ft) divided by 15

For example, for a vessel 18 feet long by 6 feet wide, the number of persons is 18 times 6 (or 108) divided by 15, which equals seven 150-lb. persons (or a total person weight of 7 x 150, or 1050 lbs.).

Sounds full to me

Paulj's formula says our 340 can take 26 person based on LOA or 20 persons based on LWL. Too much! Maybe ten if we all get along!

CharlieCobra...

I remember reading somewhere...and I don't remember where...it just stuck with me... that my Oday 22 sinks one inch for every 300 pounds. For what it's worth.

I've had ten on my Cat 27....

... and coast guard said okay as long as everyone had a PFD.

The manual for my H340 says

it has a capacity of 10 persons + luggage = 1250kg. That's on page 35, which is the Builder's Certification Plate, with the CE mark. No plate on the boat, though.

Additional info listed:

Light Ship Disp. = 11,403lb

Full Load Disp. = 15,277lb

Sink @ Full Load Disp. = 3.76"

Interesting, but not sure how it relates to a C22. I'd bet if the OP called Catalina, they'd provide whatever info and certification data there is. But in the end, you still have to sail the thing, and what it will carry is probably more than you want while trying to control the boat, IMO.

People often ask how many can sleep on my boat

These are people hinting they want to go with me. Except for really good friends, my answer is always the same. It sleeps 2, my wife and I. ;D

Manufacturer is best resource but...

the Coast Guard uses the formula that paulj gave for sailboats (and powerboats that were built before the capacity plate was required by law). Assuming a beam width of 8', your calculation would be 22*8/15=7.333 people.

Remember:
1) 1 USCG person weighs 150 lbs (and some of us are more like 1 and a half people because we are special). No honey, I'm not fat... this is ballast for the boat!
2) You are responsible for the safety of the people on your boat. If 7 people cannot fit safely on the boat, you are violating the law.

I'm not familiar with your boat but I would think 5 would be OK as long as you don't exceed 1100 lbs and can move around safely.

According to the formula . . .

I can put 7 people on my Capri 22 too . . .

Maybe when motoring. Sailing? I think not. Though I can see 5 or 6 if a couple are pre-teen kids and light winds.
