According to the label, Penetrol will clean the chalk off fibreglass. Do you recommend Penetrol. If so, what preparations are recommend before and after use? The archives also talk about using Penetrol for cleaning and blackening the black toe rails. Any comment on that?

penetrol on fiberglass
a long time ago , catalina used to have a yellow gelcoat and i had detail'd a cat 30 that was about ten years old[gelcoat that is blue ,red,yellow .green,etc..anything but white is going to oxidiation city fast if you do not keep up on it alot] anyways i detaild this boat and decided to try penetrol on the nonskid. i washed the nonskid with comet cleanser first and rinsed it very well[in the days before water quality managment in so. cal. i then foam brushed it on the nonskid and it made it look much better-not perfect,but much better. i know this sounds kooky and i am sure some would never do this as the nonskid was slick for about three days but the chalkyness was gone and the gelcoat had a 'seal' on it. while your at this site you should probably look into the is. girl products as the feedback posted seems to be positive,maybe they have a product that would work better.

Bob, Penitrol is almost like a laquer. It would be good for maintaining your mast but the wrong product for your hull. r.w.landau

I had an older Columbia 22 that had not seen a wax job in several years. I tried penetrol on the cabin and cockpit and it works fair. First I cleaned with "Bar Keeper's Friend" (similar to Comet but with Oxalic acid). I applied the Penetrol according to directions and got a fair to good finish. Care must be taken to apply the Penetrol evenly because streaks and color mismatches are easy to get. There are better finishes available on the market; I like Island Girl products. The reason I chose Penetrol is it was easier to apply and cheaper, but you get what you pay (and work) for.

What is penetrol- is it a paint additive?
I have seen penetrol in the hardware stores and it says that it is a paint "flow out" additive. May be an oil or silicone. I would like to hear more feedback about this since I did hear about its use on gelcoat about 6 years ago. Jim Willis

Toe Rails
Used Penetrol on the black toe rails on my previous boat, an 81 H30... Just wiped on the Penetrol with a rag, which took away the chalk-ies (yes the black rail had gone chalky)

I have used it, only because I want to delay the inevidable of stripping off all of my deck hardware and repainting the thing. I would say that it is a rather lot of hard work for little improvement. It has to be put on by hand like waxing your car. Any runs will harden and leave unsightly marks. Also, anyimperfections will be permanently fused to the surface. Hope this helps.
