I read an article recently, I think it was in Good Old Boat magazine, but I'm not sure. The author suggested Penetrol for old chalky decks. Has anyone done this? My deck is dull and oxidized, and I really don't think that compounding it would be fun. I'm afraid the Penetrol will make a mess.

In the process

I have a propane locker cover that has antiskid molded into it that I applied 2 coats of penetrol and I will see how it holds up through the next few weeks exposed to the weather. Tim R.

Penetrol

We bought the boat with penetrol already on the deck. It seems to attract dirt and grime very unevenly. It is impossible to remove because it pentrates and impossible to clean evenly. It took 4 years for most of it to wear off. In those 4 years our deck would have looked much better if evenly chalked. We do not recommend this product.

Penetrol is a paint conditioner. It was never

intended to be a stand alone finish. There are good products out there for many purposes but using a paint conditioner for trying to restore an oxidized fiberglass deck just runs counter to everything that makes good logic.

Penetrol can also be used as pre-compounding prep

It helps to soften the oxidation, making it easier to compound off. And it's a great use for it. But Penetrol isn't intended to be a finish and should never be used as one. People sandbag themselves into thinking it's a "restorer" because it's an oily product that makes the gelcoat shiny. So would vegetable oil, which would also attract dust, dirt and grime, but at least you can wash vegetable off.

If you ever have to...

If you ever need to do any fiberglass repairs the Penetrol will make getting good adhesion almost as tough as silicone! I read that article and can't honestly believe they let that one go through. It's just bad advice..

Bad Idea

I thought it was a bad idea. I did read it somewhere. I'm glad I didn't try it.
