Hi All,
I'm researching penetrating epoxy and getting conflicting information.

I am making another set of floor boards that cover the bilge as
my originals have rotted.

What do you use for penetrating epoxy?

On the same project I just used West, standard mix, 2 coats. Worked great. For the boards I used some high quality marine ply with a nice veneer. Epoxied the bottom and edges, 6 or 7 coats spar varnish for the top. BTW I retained the old boards and put them in when the boat is hauled out and I am tromping around with dirty shoes. Nicholas H. I've used Raka, West and MAS epoxies with good success. Usually I thin the first coat 10% with alcohol to get better penetration. tg From: "groundhog groundhogyh@... In other words, use S1 - it is formulated for penetrating wood and doesn't need thinning, which weakens the epoxy.

Thanks for the info and responses.
Yes, that west systems article was one of the conflicting pieces of info
that I found. Seems that if you want to heavily thin epoxy, you
need to be an expert at epoxy formulating.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried a vacuum chamber to suck in the epoxy? lol

The S1 seems to be pre-thinned to 50% if I am reading correctly.

I think I will probably try the 10% alcohol since I have alcohol on the boat already.

Penetrating epoxy is different than regular epoxy such as West and MAS. It is thinner and about the consistency of water. It penetrates into the wood and seals it. If there is any rot in the wood, the penetrating epoxy bonds to the rot and strengthens it.I use penetrating epoxy to seal wood before I paint or varnish it. If you are varnishing wood, using penetrating epoxy first eliminates the need for the first 2 thinned coats of varnish. The best brand that I've found is Smith's Penetrating epoxy. It gets rave reviews and it's what a lot of professionals use. I learned about it from a shipwright I took a class from. It is mixed at a one to one ratio, making it real easy to mix. Like regular epoxy, it is susceptible to UV, so you need to paint or varnish over it.Rics/v Blue Max#2692www.ric-maxfield.net
