Just wondering if the pendent tube has any maintenance concerns? Do these ever leak or corrode thru. Have an Oday 25 swing keel.

I don't think that you will have a problem with it. These O'Day shoal draft sloops are always referred to as keel/centerboard sloops which is very different than the swing keel variety that you would find on the Catalina and Santana sloops. These boats might have a swing keel that weighs 500 lbs, whereas your O'Day has an 1,825 lbs lead keel with a 60 lbs fiberglass centerboard in the keel slot that pivots on a fiber pin.
I've never had a problem with mine and my pipe enters a small pocket in the top aft part of the keel slot at a horizontal angle. There's a small sheave in that pocket where my pendant line rides through.
I think that your pipe goes straight down from the table stanchion on your boat, am I right?
I'm familiar with the 1975 O'Day 25 which has the winch on the table stanchion down below and the pipe right under it. Is your boat a 75 or a 76? I noticed that you had a question mark on that in your Owner Owner's Profile.
One of our YC members owns a 75 O'Day 25. I sailed it up from Cape Cod years ago to our club. The owner really loves this boat. I found it to be a fast sloop. I've heard other club members remark about how fast this boat is on the water. We have one other O'Day 25 and an O'Day 26 in our club which are later model O'Days.
If you look on the upper right corner of the outside transom, the last two numbers in your serial number will be the year that the boat was built. There will be a letter after those numbers which stands for the month that it was built. A=August, B=September and Etc under the old O'Day serial number format prior to 1984.
The later model O'Days had the same pendant line set up as my boat in which the pendant line is led up into the cockpit in front of the companionway. The pendant line pipe on my boat is shaped like an "L" and it has short pieces of rubber hose connected at the top and bottom where it connects on to a through hull connector and the steel pipe leading into that small pocket in the keel slot.
If your boat is set up with the small winch with metal cable, you could change it over to braid line. You're centerboard is fiberglass and it should be the same size and weight as the boards that were installed in the later model O'Day 25s and 26s. I don't think there is a sheave in the keel slot on your boat if it's set up like the 1975 O'Day 25.
I'd be interested in knowing how your centerboard pendant line is set up. I've inquired about the 76 O'Day 25 and never got an answer. At any rate, there is no harm in visually checking the pipe but I woudn't do anything to disturb it. There's an old saying that goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I've been guilty of disregarding that old saying myself. :)

Well Thanks Joe. Mine is a 76 and like yours the pendent is run to the cockpit and is a braided line. I was just wondering about it cause you can't see it on my boat. It is under cabinetry under the companionway. I can see just a very small piece of it as it comes through the cabin sole and before it goes into the cabinets. It just looked like metal to me so 37 years seems like it could rust away and the down goes the boat. Are these some other material then steel?

Hi Greg,
Thanks for getting back to me on this. I was wondering how the 76 OD 25 was set up and now I know. I think that you're in like Flynn. I'm pretty sure that the pipe is made of stainless steel. It probably enters in back of a small pocket in the top of the keel slot. There is probably a single sheave block located inside the pocket in which the braid pendant line runs through. It's probably a Schaeffer block mounted on a special U clamp which was inserted believe it or not, through the bottom of the keel as one unit. The small back up plate and two nuts for this U clamp/sheave assembly may be visable in the cabin where it comes into this pocket. Actually, my pocket resembles a hump under an access sole plate in my cabin. I have a picture of it.
If anything Greg, I would be more concerned with the shackle attachment on the centerboard.

Two years ago I had my boat up on stands and I was able to let my centerboard down to check the shackle. The pendant line and the shackle were still in good condition but the cotter pin in the shackle's rigging pin had broke. So I replaced it. I'm glad that I checked it out. I sure didn't want to find out the hard way after the boat was in the water.
The centerboard pendant lines on these boats will last for years.

I remember talking to a lady in NV last year who has a boat like mine, a later model to, probably built on the West coast, and she was wearing out centerboard pendant lines like crazy. As it turned out, when they were building the boat at the factory, they neglected to install the sheave U bolt assembly into the keel slot. Who'da thunk it? The worker probably went on his coffee break and forgot about it when he came back.

Yours is similar to mine. Mine isn't all shiny stainless like yours and mine leaves the bilge at about a 45 degree angle not sure what happens at the cockpit bulkhead as I can't see it. Is that block replaceable? Looks hard to get to. Also my bilge has a 6" to 4" hump the whole length effectively making it two separate troughs. I only have one bilge pump so I manually have to drain the side without it. After second look I see it is a bolt through on the block. I'll have to look to see if mine has anything like that on the inside. Which won't be till March.

Mine doesn't have a block up inside the c/b case.
Really!
Are you sure Rich? Maybe his keel slot doesn't have one either. My friend Ray has an 86 O'Day 26 and his keel slot has the block in it like mine. He removed his centerboard a few years ago and that's how he found out. Also, Ed K. has, or did have, an O'Day 26 with the sheave block in the slot. He removed it and later reinstalled it with a long stick that he was able to Mickey Mouse to get it up in there.
Do you know if your pendant line pipe goes straight down into the top of the keel slot from the compainionway step? My pipe comes straight down and takes a 90 degree bend.

I have no idea why they installed a sheave block in Ray's 26 but I have a pretty good idea why they installed them in the O'Day 222. They probably needed to get the pipe back and out of the way to make room for a 48 quart cooler to be placed behind the step inside the cabin.
I don't think they had this in mind when they first started coming out with the O'Day 22 in a keel/centerboard. I could be wrong about that though. Kevin R. could probably give us an answer to that one because I'm not all that familiar with the K/C O'Day 22. In fact, I've never seen one in my area. Hmmmm!

The O'DAY 26 seems to be a short-lived model that was an updated 25, maybe they learned something from the 222 which was introduced the same year and added a sheave inside the CB trunk.
Anyway Joe.... here is a few clues as to how the 1975 (and some early 1976 models) O'DAY 25 CB was set up.
I then added pics and a diagram of the later model rigging (I reverse engineered it a bit, so any O'DAY 25 owners are free to comment and or correct).

Yeah that is what I have. I had forgotten about the line coming through the counter top. And as you can see the the tube is pinkish leading me to believe it is steel that is painted not Stainless.

Thank you Rod. Those are great illustrations. The fog is beginning to lift for me. I never had an idea of how they were set up because of the galley arrangement on those boats. Ray's O'Day 26 is a 1986 model with the same set up as my O'Day 222. Perhaps they did copy the O'Day 192 and 222 keel/centerboard arrangement for the 26.

Geehaw,
It's easy to find out if your pendant line pipe is regular steel by using a magnet.

Keith,
Most of the time my brains are like mush. If I have any special mental processing at all, I probably acquired it during the 32 years when I worked as a lineman for a power company. Outside of that, I'm just another hairy legged guitar picker who loves sailing. :D
