Lifted our 22 O'Day earlier today to apply a new pendant with shakle to the centerboard swing keel. Previous pendant line is applied through a 3/8" hole in the lower "edge" of the keel and through to a lateral hole 1.25" where a knot was applied to retain the line. The 1.25" hole, with the knot was then encased with an epoxy type product and the sides smoothed. Question: Is this a normal or original type application for our 1979 O'Day?

I found in the Forum for DSII an illustration that shows keel line application that is similar to the one I found on our 1979 O'Day for raising and lowering the keel. Possible answer? I'll try Rudy at D&R for possible explanation on Wed....

I believe my 1979 O'Day 20 has the same configuration that you described. Whether it is original or not, I don't know. But I replaced my pendant last year and from what I can remember, it is like in the attached pdf drawing which seems to match what you described. Keep in mind that I did this drawing from memory and it is not to scale or anything. I also did not measure and just used your measurements from the first post as a reference to what I believe you were describing.

I just put the pendant in through the smaller hole, tied a figure 8 knot and considered it done. I might have tied a second knot also as a backup, just whatever I could fit in the width of the centerboard. Mine also did not have any epoxy tape or anything to cover it. Just an open hole. I don't race or care about getting that extra knot, so I don't worry about it.

Larsden, Thanks for the PDF drawing. The only difference noted is that the smaller (longitudinal) hole is more toward the "corner" edge of the keel. ;o)
PS: The wind and temp out on Lake Erie (Gibraltar, MI) this morning was excellent - nice 3 hours sailing!
Thanks, John

FYI, Just talked to D&R Marine - Rudy advised that the application of the line (5/16") through the edge hole to the larger lateral hole then knotted and locked in with epoxy is the original application for a 1979 O'Day 22. Mystery Solved! I will be returning the pendant line and shackle unless someone in Gibraltar needs the pendant?
Thanks again, John
