Would like some input on inlets entering atlantic from the sound. How is the Hatteras inlet? From what I can find on noaa charts seems to be the best inlet to use

I have not been there in a long while but it looks like you are correct... I just checked out Active Captain and there are several 2015 postings of shoaling. However looking at the Hatteras on Active Captain and it looks about the same with 2015 postings of shoaling. You might be best off going south to New Bern and taking the ICW to Beaufort. Do you have the shoal or full keel version of the H30?

Full keel, heck I thought since there are a lot of fishing boats at hatteras they would keep that area up to date as far as channel markers

As a former dealer in North Carolina for Hunter and Catalina, I would suggest that you enter via Beaufort for the ICW. Shoaling is an issue and with a deep keel, I would be concerned. Do not attempt to take the Alligator River part of the ICW channel at night.

If you must take Oregon or Hatteras Inlets make friends first with a local charter captain who goes out every day. Get as much local knowledge as you can absorb and then follow that local out. Like Crazy DVe suggests, you will be better served to run inside from Norfolk to Beaufort, and in the journey see some of the best protected sailing on the east coast. Crazy Dave, how are you?

Send me an email via forum so I can contact you. Have moved with 340 degree views of mountains overlooking an active railroad that family built in the 1800's. Modeling a 2000 square foot basement since November and nearing completion. Forgot that we overlook the beginning of the James River.
