Peggy, why not 2 heads on 1 tank?

Peggy, on another post (40.5 vent being blocked), you sounded quite negative on 2 heads plumbing to one holding tank. While I have had issues with mine, I am wondering why you feel this is inappropriate. As well, do you find the Sealand vent filters allow a tank to breathe?

Two heads CAN be connected to one tank IF--

They're both close enough to the tank that neither head discharge hose is longer than about 6-8'. That's about as far away as one head should ever be from a tank, 'cuz any longer, and waste will inevitably be left sitting in the hose between the head and the tank to permeate the hose and contribute to clogs. There's no way to put a tank within 6-8' of both fore and aft heads on a 40' boat...there's no way to avoid a too-long run from at east one, and the shorter the hose from one head, the longer it has to be from the other. Connecting two heads that far apart to one tank is just asking for problems. A filter prevents the free-flow of air in and out the vent line. Peggy, more about sealand filter

Peggy, I of course appreciate the need for a tank to breathe, and I thought somehow the filters had a mini check valve, or some way to accomplish this. Are you familiar with anyone having any success with vent line filters? The problem I have ias that the vent is on the side of the hull, with the holding tank fittin on the side of it. The tank has a sloped profile, so when you heel, you get real smelly gas coming out of the vent. Your thoughts?

How long is the vent line, and where does it go between the head & the thru-hull?
