is the Headmate 1460 any better or worse? I just bought a new boat, and the 1460 came standard. I have been reading, reading, reading, and it would seem that there are a lot of unhappy people with Wilcox Crittenden. Perhaps I am reading too much, but your opinion is valuable. Thanks in advance...

Headmate is better quality than jabsco
But it's still a "budget" light-duty toilet, as is the Groco HF (also better quality than Jabsco). Both are adequate for most "weekend warrior" use but not the best choice for a live aboard/blue water cruising family or lumberjack guest users. Yours is brand new, so it hasn't suffered from any neglect or abuse yet...So unless you're planning move aboard and/or cut the dock lines, keep it well-lubed, don't flush anything that shouldn't go down ANY marine toilet, and you should get years of reliable service from it.
