and I went ahead and installed a new toilet along with the vented loops. Yes, in spite of your advice, [ducks and runs for cover] I put in another cheap Jabsco.... go ahead, I can take it! I did it because it was on 40% off, plus West Marine never put a date on my New Boater discount card and the same clerks are still honoring it, so I got another 10%, which made the toilet cost about $87. I'm also selling the boat in 2 years and figure I can keep it clean and running for that long. And the holes fit! That counts for something. Here's a picture, 2 more follow. I'm interested in your opinion. (I know the double hose clamps are overkill on most of those hoses, but I did put them on in opposite directions and 1 is only partially tightened.) I also discovered (through your bucket test, not my 'clear hose' test) that the pump is a lot more powerful than I had given it credit for. It does pump most of the water over the 4 foot loop I put in. 1 question: Should I be concerned about the coating of grey matter on the inside of the discharge hose? It's about 1/8" thick and not adhered very tightly. I suppose that is what will eventually permeate the hose and cause it to need replacement. Thanks for all your help. I'm sure I will be bothering you again..... keep the tylenol handy!! And hang in there.... you are a great resource to all of us out here! Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

That "gray" matter is sea water minerals and

urine crystals and the animal fats in waste. If it's 1/8" thick already, it's gonna get a lot thicker...gradually reducing the diameter of the hose enough to cause problems--and yes, permeate the hose. A quart of fresh water, followed by a cupful vinegar, flushed all the way through the system before the boat is to sit will keep it from building up.

A question about the discharged loop vent

First off, nice installation job, and nice pictures, thanks. I'm a bit confused about the discharged line vent, though. Unless you are discharging directly overboard through a below water through hull, why is the vent necessary? Mine goes straight into the holding tank.

Here we go again...:)

A vented loop is not needed in a discharge line that only goes to a tank...UNLESS--waste spills into the head discharge line when the boat is heeled (which can be prevented by simply moving the inlet away from the hull, toward the centerline of the boat). Even then, a VENTED loop is not needed, but a loop that waste can't climb over is a good idea. And yes...very good pictures, showing the loops where they should be. Mind if I "boost" 'em for my files?

You're welcome to, Peggy.

Glad to be able to help. And if you ever use them, you don't have to tell people that the discharge vented loop is going to the holding tank - it can just as easily be heading to the through-hull. Jviss, you're right, the vent in that loop is unnecessary. I put it in for a number of reasons, none of them overwhelming: - I had bought the vented loop before Peggy educated me that it wasn't needed - Both Raritan and Jabsco show a vented loop in that line when the toilet is below the waterline - I think the two vented loops nested there look neat :) - The vented loop has 3 neat little angles on it that are very convenient for mounting - When I sell the boat in 2 years, hopefully a prospective buyer will be impressed ;-))) As I said, not an overwhelming set of reasons, but they added up and I installed it! Peggy, on the 'grey matter' I will take a large bottle of vinegar to the boat this weekend and start flushing the discharge hose. It is uphill from the bottom of the loop to the inlet on the tank, so I can't get the water out of it, but at least it will be vinegarized water in there when it sits. Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

Thanks for the photos, Bob...and...

"- I think the two vented loops nested there look neat" So do I! :) But... "When I sell the boat in 2 years, hopefully a prospective buyer will be impressed ))" Since most buyers today are more impressed by decor than safety and functionality, it's more likely that HE'LL be impressed...she'll think they're "ugly." Oh well...at least YOU know the difference between a boat and a condo that floats. "but at least it will be vinegarized water in there when it sits." <lol> And it will be FRESH water too, right? :) Every now and then I run into a boat owner who actually GETS it! Yeeeeeeeeeee...HAAAAH! :) Hey Bob...I know Seattle isn't exactly next door to you (Atlanta-NY is prob'ly closer)...but I'm gonna be in Seattle for the Lake Union Boat Show in Sept, giving seminars every day Thurs-Sun. If you can, come on up...I'll buy YOU a drink! :)
