How effective is the Peel Away Marine Safety Strip product in removing layers of built-up ablative bottom coat? Is the cost worth the efficiency? Thanks.

If you use the correct version of Peel-Away. But 'why' remove ablative paint??

Peter, I have used the Home Depot version, not the marine. Personally, it worked great, great, great. I wouldn't pay the extra money for the marine version. Follow directions. Put a tarp down and go home for the night. I took off ten years of hard paint. Paul

Thinking of the same thing...

about to haul my 37.5 and considering removing the old paint. I'm just starting to get my head around the issue. As Allan points it, it seems illogical that you would need to remove ablative paint, but I know there is fiarly decent build up. And, I want to get a clear picture of any blister issues I might have. Seems that getting it down to bare bones might be the best way. I'm considering the peel away (home depot version) or having it soda blasted. Awaiting quotes on the latter, and suspecting that with the $$$, I'll be high on peel away most of the winter...;)

Just finished

I just finished my 42 footer using Peel Away. I had three - four coats that need to be removed and found that it took two application on most of the bottom. That means that I used almost twice what I had originally intended. It's a lot of hard work. The paint doesn't just peel off, you have to work hard using a paint scrapper to get mulitple layers. If it does just fall off, it only removes one layer of paint. I used four, 5 gallon buckets. Not trying to talk you out of it. Just want to make you aware of the process. Ian

I'm hauling on Tuesday. One of my projects is to remove 30 years of who knows what paint so I can do the bottom right. At some time in her life, Befana had some sort of epoxy applied to her hull. Three years ago (three coats of paint ago) I ground out and filled 100's of small blisters. I'm going to strip the bottom. Grind, sand, plane what ever it take to get to a surface I can work with. If Home Depot stripper will work, I'm in! After getting the bottom clean, I'm letting her dry out, doing the bottom in the latest/greatest waterproof anti-blister goop and making the bottom as sound as I can. If the blisters come back ... she'll be for sale. The next boat will be wood ... grrrrr :)

Two Coats of Peel-A-Way

We used the marine product, some years ago. Under our 30 footer for an entire month of August. I agree that the Home Depot product might a better choice. In either case, however, I learned that, no matter what, two applications and two scrapings were required. At least to get to the point where we could sand the "film" to a clean bottom. One thing that I noticed about Peel-A-Way is that, in very warm temperatures, the product did not have time to penetrate before it dried. If I did that again, which I won't, I would choose a cooler month. Also, the wax paper that sells with the product IS NOT necessary. At least as far as I can tell. We used Cut-Rite wax paper, for wrapping sandwiches. It seems to work just as well. I hope that I helped.

The marine version of "peel-away" got good reviews in Practical Sailor about 5 years ago, so I gave it a try (the West Marine house version labelled "peel-away pro"). I got terrible results, that is to say no results; the product didn't soften the paint enough to even scrape it off with heavy scraping, so the peeling paper was useless. Others who reviewed this product on the West Marine web site had similar problems. I think the problem was that my bottom paint was the non-ablative West Marine "Bottomcote" paint, which is an epoxy. It was apparently too hard for this formula to penetrate. So there are 2 important details here: are all house brands of "peel-away" the same product? And if so, what type of bottom paint are you removing? I would say don't use this product on a non-ablative bottom. All in all, Interstrip 299 will be much quicker and easier to work with than this stuff, on whichever type of bottom...

A total waste of time and money, one of the few things marinewize that was a total bust with no redeeming value. And yes I followed all the directions and still got nowhere. Finally had the yard blast off the paint for $1,200.

DO NOT USE PEEL AWAY

I USED PEEL AWAY A FEW YRS AGO, THE STUFF DRIED INTO A PAPER MACHE HARD MESS, I HAD TO HAVE THE YARD REMOVE THE STUFF BY HAND SCRAPPING AND SAND BLASTING FOR 2-3 WKS OF WORK AND OVER A THOUSAND BUCKS LOST. I LOST MANY WKS OF SAILING. THIS STUFF SUCKS, DO NOT USE PEEL AWAY. ROBERT

How long did you let it dry, Robert?

It's only supposed to remain on the hull overnight...and only within certain temperature limits. And it sounds like the WM knock-off is a bust...'cuz the original worked quite well for those for followed instructions.

Same boat for 23 years.

In 2000 I decided to remove the bottom paint as there was way to much build up. Problem was I kept using the cheapest paint I could find. It was peeling and flaking leaving a rough surface. Not wanting to sand and take a chance of inhaling copper and lord knows what else,I tried Peel Away. My 23 footer took three buckets #2 and #3 were West Marine version. Spread a tarp on the ground and used a power washer to remove the remover and paint. Sometimes I would just rewet it to make it work longer. I found it was water soluble and when the directions said to cover the paste with the thin plastic and leave sit, I decided that they wanted it to stay wet. As Emril says " the paste was happy " and took off the bottom paint. Powerwasher made it rather easy too. BTW the washer was one of those cheap plastic electric ones that didn't have a lot of power. I did open up some blisters that needed repair, but I would have had to do that anyway. Like most I also was having trouble scraping. It wasn't working by using the directions.
