I would like to install a pedistal guard on our 85 31 hunter. All orginal equipment from manufacture, I can fabricate the guard myself by I need to know how and where the guard ties onto the pedistal. Can I buy this or do I make this as well?

Depends on the mounting method.

Ned: It depends on how you ultimately want to mount the binnacle. Most owners have them mounted them to the cockpit sole. If that is the case, then you can get all the parts from Edson. On our H'31 the tube was bent and a flange was contoured to screw into the pedestal. This keeps you from stubbing toes and there is no chance of a leak in the future.

Pedistal Feet

I installed an Edson pedistal guard on my '90 H30 a few years ago. You need the feet to properly install the guard. If you order the whole thing from Edson, the feet come with it, but you can purchase the feet separately if you are going to fabricate your own guard---just make sure the tube diameter is the same. I drilled completely through the cockpit sole. There were aluminum plates in the sole, similar to the cabin top for winch mounting. I could have drilled and tapped, and used machine screws, but decided to drill clear through and use very large (3 inch) washers and bolts, thinking it would be stronger. They take a lot of abuse....
