My 1978 H30 did not come with a Pedestal Wheel Brake. I would like to know if anyone out in the Hunter Sailing World knows what kind will fit. I look at Sailnet, and they have one for all Edson Pedestals, I don't know if this will work because, I don't know what knid of Pedestal I have on my H30. Please Help This SAILOR Thanks, Tony

Wheel Brake

I have a Hunter 336 which came with no wheel brake.. The steering is Edson... If yours is also Edson I would get the kit from them.. Was able to install it myself..

found it great to have

My Edson steering did not have a wheel brake and I've read somewhere this is the single most common upgrade done by sail boaters with Edson systems. I can see why. It really gives me the ability to step away from the wheel for short itmes to adjust sheets, go below, go forward, whatever. The way Il ook at it, it's sort of a poor man's autopilot. It's easy to install (well, not easy -- some of the pedestal innards are hard to reach) but it's certainly do-able for the weekender.

Hey Tony

Fixing to move to PC full timein April/May! We own a condo on East end of beach near St. Andrews Park. Anyway, we have a 28.5 w/Edson pedastal and brake. As previously said, great "poor man's autopilot"! Are there no external markings on your pedastal? Other possibility is that it's a Merriman (sp?). Where do you keep your boat. I'll be in town around the 5th or so of April and could give a look. On the starboard side of pedastal down near throttle control there should be a round raised "bossing" that looks like it has a plug in it. Thats where brake would mount. Have you had your compass off? May be some mfg. markings inside pedastal.

E mail Edison

I emailed Edison and they knew which model I had from registration sent in by my dealer. I installed one on my 260. Their instructions are very straightforward. I would suggest shoving a rag down the shaft (below where the brake goes) to catch any dropped parts. The biggest problem I had was installing the brass cotter pin at the end. It is such a tight fit, I could only get one leg in. Might want to look at this before you start & perhaps use next smaller size. Good luck.

Look at the helm for YS on the wheel nut

I have a 1979 Hunter 30 and have a Yacht Specialties pedestal. The key is the YS on the wheel nut. You will find a small plug on the starboard side to accept a wheel brake. These are available from this site from the ship's store. Note: I went to tear my pedestal down to get at the location to put in the brake but could not get out the frozen bolts and am not at the point where I drill them out and re-tap. I still use a bungee cord. Good Luck. Ian

Related to this - Has anyone a Throttle Lock

I too have the YS steering and need a steering lock but also find my throttle needs to be stiffer. Any solutions out there?

Stephen, piece of cake,

Most Y/S systems use a set screw. It is located inside the compass binnacle, on the casting holding the throttle lever, just above it, of course. Use an Allen wrench, (About 4mm) to tighten the screw against the lever. It's a special screw with a nylon face to protect the shaft. You may have to hog out dirt to see it. This is one of the great secrets of these systems.

This is how you control the throttle tension. http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=Dion73064768600&fno=17

Fred, it may be required on all boats but yours!

The set screw is a temporary solution and is a PIA to keep tightening. The 'J' clamp solution was recommended by a "certified Yanmar mechanic".

Snap ring

Ed: If you cannot find one at any local shops, you may want to contact McMaster. They sell everything, or may be able to put you in contact with one of their distributors. http://www.mcmaster.com/

Steve, I've only had to adjust mine once in 18

years. The compass bulb didn't last that long. Most folks that use the clamp method, don't know about the setscrew. The clamp puts pressure on the cable via its' wall. That causes point loading and wear, jamming and pre-mature failure. Maybe that's why the Yanmar certified mechanic recommends them. Job security. I said 'maybe'. :) Ed, I need a snap ring too. I'm going to check out Steves' link. Ah, Steve, is that link your certified mechanic? :) :) P.S. I checked Steves' link. (Steve, COOL!) Here is the part that should work. It's stainless. http://www.mcmaster.com/asp/DisplCtlgPage.asp?ReqTyp=CATALOG&CtlgPgNbr=3052&CtlgEdition=&RelatedCtlgPgs=3050,3051,3052,3053,3054&sesnextrep=409254891633947. That link had a screen width command that just freaked out my browser. I deleted that part. The part number of the Stainless eclip that is metric, (13mm=1/2") that should work, is 98317A237 P.S.2. Ed I just realized you are looking for the snap ring on the steering shaft. I was looking for the engine control shaft snap rings. The one you want is there too. It's on the previous page. I'm not sure of the size you need.

Wheel Brake - replacement An important, hard-to-find replacement part for 80's-vintage Hunters Most Hunters built in the 1980s had a Merriman or Yacht Specialties pedestal and wheel assemblies. Then, Merriman went out of business in 1989, along with all hope of replacement parts... until now. Paul Hart, owner of a 1987 H-34, designed and builds his own, graciously making them available to other owners through HOW. They are manufactured from stainless steel and aluminum, and are installed in about an hour. Complete installation instructions are included. This has proven to be a great replacement part and HOW stands behind it with a full money-back guarantee. Estimated delivery: April 15

Need help with Merriman Yacht Specialties Pedestal

Sorry - No Hunter but a valid Newport (1985 N30)question. I have Merriman Yacht Specialties pedestal steering. Does anyone know how to replace/disconnect the throttle and shift cables from inside the pedestal? Does anyone know where to get a book about the pedestal? Thanks for any help. I am the new owner of this boat and want to do preventive maintenance.
