Hi Y'all.. On my Merriman/Yacht Specialties pedestal, there is a plastic housing under the compass that has the throttle and tranny shifters on it. On tha tranny side, the little piece that is used to anchor the outer sheath of the shifting cable has broken off. This happened several months back, and I repaired it with epoxy, and have babied it ever since, but it let go last nite right in the middle of a busy fairway! Anybody know of a source for a replacement? New??? Used??? I would like to avoid the need to build a new one from scratch. This is the piece that fits just under the compass. If anybody would know, you guys would, I'm hopin'. Thanks, Dave

In the arcihves

I found this in the archives ,let us know if he is still producing them. The number is to a machine shop "The binnacle on my '81 H31 was made by Merriman Yacht Specialties. The plastic cylindrical part that houses the throttle and shift levers broke, and after several calls, I located a replacement. The replacement is aluminum. Call Joe Constance at 425-438-1161. The cost is $160 plus shipping"

Thanks

Thank you Frank; I've called and talked to Terry at the shop. Terry doesn't know about it, but he gave me Joes's phone, and I called and left a message for him. Sure would be terrific to get a new part! Thanks again. Dave

Success!!!!!!

Thanks again to Frank. I called Joe again this AM, and the part is on its way UPS! I queried as to why he had it, and he replied he made it for a friend who found himself in this sitch. It's made from an aluminum sand casting, ready-to-paint, and the cost is still $160. Jeff, he has more, so give him a call. There is additional Phone Number: 425-347-8920. Can't overstate the importance of getting this part if yours is busted/weak/badly repaired. I was in tight quarters when the tranny shifter became useless and I was in reverse at fast idle! My only course was to kill the engine and jump (you should see me "jump"....64 years old and pushing 250lbs!!) into the skiff, lash it to the boat, hope the outboard would start, and then start getting things under control. It all worked out, but it could have been worse. Thanks to a great resource....this board!

Happy ending

Phil, It may be helpful to put this machinist and his number in your library or sell them for him in your chandlery. The older our boats get the more we may need them.

The part arrived!

I got the part today, and WOW!! Merriman/Yacht Specialties could take a lesson from Joe. I think I could sustain a hit amidships from a U-Boat, which would destroy Duet into splinters, but the part would survive! Not only is it made from an aluminum sand casting instead of plastic, but there are fillets to strengthen the aluminum, and nylon (or equal) bearings are pressed into place for the shifters, the mounting holes are tapped for the mounting bolts, on and on. I don't want to create a "run" on these parts for Joe, but if you have experienced any weakness in this part, replace it. Jeff, jump on this. My very best wishes and thanks to all, Dave
