The wheel on my 1981 H33 will not turn to move the rudder to port and starboard as it should. The wheel will only turn about 45 degrees in either direction. I have checked the rudder and nothing is blocking movement there. I removed the compass and looked at the chain drive on the gear. It appears ok at the top, but it will only move so far and then it appears to bind. I have looked at the cables underneath and they appear to be OK. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Look at rudder stuffing box area
I had that same year and model. The only thing I can think of is the area that the rudder shaft goes through the stuffing box. It sounds like something there may be hitting as the rudder is turned. That is an easy spot to get to so should be inspected without a problem.

new problem
Is this a new problem? my 28.5 has stops on the wheel the cables are attached, to prevent the wheel and cables from binding.

The rudder stopers.
Bob, On H30's there are (2) metal stopper blocks under the quadrant wheel. They allow only 35-45 degree ruder movment per side. I did not like that when I noticed it for the first time, but after two seasons I found it is OK and does not cause any problems when steering the boat. She turns "on the dime" regardless. I'd suspect your boat's design may have symilar arrangement. JMZ Free Spirit.
