Pedestal steering by Yacht Specialties

I recently bought a 1990 Pacific Seacraft 31, which turns out to be equipped with Yacht Specialties, not Edson, steering. I've tried to track down sources for information but have been told that Y-S was bought by Merriman, who,in turn, went out of business. The only source I found referred me to your site, so I assume that at least some Hunters are equipped with Y-S pedestals. My unit is in generally good shape except for the wheel-axle bearings, which are quite dry and in need of lubrication. Does any participant has any information on these units, especially a manual illustrating disassembly-assembly and lubrication instructions? I'd be happy to reimburse the cost of copying and mailing if that should be the case. Is there any hope that there might be a supply of spare parts lurking somewhere? If there's no connection between Hunters and Y-S, forgive the intrusion. Thanks and regards, Dick Wasteneys

Dick, do you have a pedestal or one of those back-

ward mounted steering shafts? I ask because all of the YS pedestals I've seen, have nylon bearings, so they don't need lubing for life. And, not that it makes one little bit of difference, Merriman owned the YS brand name for as long as I've been doing this sport. (70s) I think they just got tired, rolled over and died. Kinda like an old horse. P.S. or are you talking about the sheaves below deck that turn the wire to the quadrant, if so equipped? Those wheel bearing just need a thick chain lube from a foof can.

Thanks Fred

It's a regular pedestal - I suspected it had nylon bearings, but they still creak as if they need SOMETHING. I wonder if a shot of teflon spray, directed as closely as possible, might help. As far as I know, it doesn't attack nylon, at least.

Dick, where have you been, sailing?

Any spray lube will make those nylon bearings happy. Remember, nylon containers hold acid. Because you have a pedestal, that creaking noise could be transmitted from below. Be sure to lube the sheaves too. In other words, lube everything.
