Pedestal Guard Replacement

I wish to replace my 12" on center 48" high by 1" in diameter pedestal guard on my 1983 H31. I have ordered a double-bend pedestal for a NavPod installation. It is 12" wide by 58" high by 1.25" in diameter. There are issues with the 1.25" diameter tubing because my three place teak cup holder, teak table and maybe even the support between the pedestal and the guard are all made for 1" tubing. I have performed a cursory search for cup holder mounts and table mounts for 1.25" tubing and I just don't see anything. Has anyone out there encountered this problem and how did you resolve all of these issues? I have been told I presently have an Edson guard, but those are all 9.5" on center and my present guard is 12" on center. I believe the new guard which has been ordered from West Marine is Manufactured by Ocean Marine who makes the NavPod setup. You can find the guard I ordered on the bottom of page 107 (Model #2001030). It gets even stranger with Edson guards which are 1-1/8" in diameter and can be found on Page-905. Why can't the replacement just be clean and easy?

Not much hardware built for 1.25" tubing.

Greg: There is not a lot of hardware built for the 1.25" tubing. I think that Seadog offers pedestal clamps for 1.25" tubing so that may be an option. I would reconsider moving up to the larger size. If you want additional strength you can purchase thicker walled tubing. On our old H'31 we had the legs bent so they attached to the pedestal tube and not the cockpit sole. I felt that this gave us the advantage of not having to worry about water entering the sole through the pedestal guard mounting point. I see no reason why you cannot get a piece of heavy walled tube bent at the shop that fabricates stainless steel.

Thicker Tubing

Steve: I am not interested necessarily in strength, but in the ability to have a higher pedestal guard where I have the ability to mount a NavPod system. My existing pedestal is already mounted on the cockpit sole, so I don't know if water leakage is really a problem. It may be after I remove the existing guard. Thanks for your input! Greg W.

I had noodled the ideas only,,,

to stay with the 1" guard because of the cost of replacing existing hardware and accesories..... You can see what was involved on Sea Dragon's website. http://www.sailingseadragon.com Then going to "Projects" and then "Replacing Instruments" Good Luck..

Edson

If I could find a 1" diameter tube from Edson double bent, I would. If you know where I can find one, please provide the link. Greg W.

Looks like from

The link Steve sent they make a 1" system but its 9.5 wide why not go with that, then you just have to move the feet and change the top plate.
