I have a 1979 catalina 30' with a d/a (DonAllen) pedestal and helm. The engine controls are on the side of the cockpit floor. I want to move the controls to the pedestal without having to replace the entire helm. Suggestions?

What engine do you have and can you post some pics of the pedestal and, if possible, the mechanism inside? If you have the Atomic 4, give Moyer Marine a call and see if they can point you in the right direction.

I did this on my 1976 Catalina 30...a great idea! You may have to get new cables to reach, especially if the pedestal is mounted aft in the cockipit. Mine is about dead center and my existing cables barely reached. I did replace the trans cable because the old one was pretty stiff.

Having the controls on the pedestal seems like the only way to go. Not sure how I would have run the engine and steered too!

What equipment did you add to the pedestal to connect to the cables? Would an Edson adapter work?

Not sure about the DA installation. My recommendation would be to call Edson and talk to them. I'm more than certain that they can steer you in the right direction (pun intended). They have no doubt heard this before and should be able to tell you what you need.

I installed the power adaptor that has the throttle on the right side and the transmission lever on the left side. I have a Yanmar diesel in mine, and it has a different transmission than the Atomic would have used, which necessitated using a different fitting at the transmission. I bought a new trans cable because the old one was sticking pretty badly. I had to change the routing of the cables, and just barely had enough length to make it to the levers. Best mod I could have done, in my opinion.

Since you are creating a "new" control on the helm why not do single lever control.
