My 30 is leaking around the head sink drain thru hull. The matting seems to be not glassed in around the pipe completely. Water comes in under a matting flap. Hopefully this will be simple enough to grind away the loose matting and glass it over. Anyone run into this?

The thru hull should be sealed under the flange on the outside of the hull. If it is leaking inside the boat you need to haul it out, pull out the thru hull and reseal it. A picture would help, do you have a seacock or a ball valve attached to the thru hull? What kind of backing plate, etc?

It could also be electrolysis of the thru hull itself, I would make this a high priority. Do you have a tapered plug tied to it just in case?

Wow! Never thought about that. I have tapered plugs but I'm five hours from the marina now and didn't plan to go back before the first of September. I guess I'll have to run over and put one in from the outside until I can haul it. Thanks.

Just be real careful with pressing in a plug from outside while the boat is in the water. As already suggested as a possibility by Ned Ludd, if the thru-hull is in fact bronze, and has become brittle by electrolysis (the metal color has gone from yellow/gold to "PINK"), then ramming a tapered plug into it might shatter the thru-hull. Then stemming the leak becomes a crisis.

See the attached photo of my new strut (installed several years ago actually) vs. the 33 year old strut which split in an attempt to press out the prop shaft bushing. The cracks are evident on the "pink" shaft.

This is also pertinent information. I planned to push it in from the outside so I'll be light about it. Right now I figure it leaks four to five gallons a day which the bilge pump has no problem with. Scary though to think of a failure with that system. Thank you.

Excellent amount of information on that site. I believe mine is the old style with the thru hull glassed in. The paint color around the site is original. With the boat being a 73', I expect to run into these type of issues. (The Atomic 4 has already tried to get my goat). Thank you.
