Are there any owners of a Pearson 303 that have experience a crack on the aft end of the keel where it meets the hull?

Hi Paul.
I have sailed on a Pearson. Great boat. Your crack on the keel is not unique to Pearson 303's.

Ideas about the crack and how it might be fixed would be easier if you could take pictures and share them here.

I'll get a pic uploaded as soon as I can.

This is a crack at the aft end of the keel on a Pearson 303. Any suggestions > best way to repair. Have other 303 owners experienced this?

OK. That sort of damage suggests the boat hit something while in reverse. It looks like it is where the encapsulated lead keel is attached to the keel stub of the boat.

I would examine the keel area inside and outside the boat for signs of damage.

When hitting an underwater object, attached keels move like a fulcrum. Near the object, they move out and away from the hull, leaving a visible crack. On the opposite end of the keel, the movement is up and inward, causing compression-type damage.

Here is an image of a hull and the keel attachment for some perspective.

Pearson had a lead keel….. not encapsulated. I would grind that down. Lead doesn’t crack like that. On my 36-2 I had big pieces of the faring material come off showing bare lead. Just redid and all was good. But do check your bolts inside. If you hit something you would have an impact spot that was noticeable.

I second NYSail. Your crack could be fairing. You really can't tell what is going on until you sand/grind it down.
