Hello from up north. I have a pearson hawk that needs a tiller. I also would not object to constructing one, that is if any one has specs. on it. Can anybody help me out? Thanks Paul Mistmountainhop56@yahoo.com

If you have the tiller head, the casting that holds the wooden handle then all you need to do is make a new handle. You can make it straight or curved, you can make it from a solid piece of wood or from several thin strips of wood of the same or of several species. You should make it to fit you. If you are quite tall you may want to build a curve into it so the handle is at a comfortable height when you let go of it at a stop.

Check West Marine or some of the other marine stores. They have ready made tillers in various sizes. All you have to do is apply the finish of your choice. I have done this to a couple of boats and they turned out great.

If you are going to buy one, check Defender.com. Their prices on tillers were way better than West Marine's a few years ago when I bought my last one. The H&L tillers are really nice; far better made than anything I could do myself, and they look like they come with about 5 coats of high quality varnish applied.

You could also check out Idasailor, they have custom tillers for many boats, as well as universal ones.

Contact H & L Marine in Rancho Domiquez, CA. They make them and they are very high quality.

As a Hawk owner I can say with some confidence that no one will have the specs for a Hawk tiller. I'm happy to take some measurements and send pictures!

Arron, Thanks for the offer but it seems like i need mre than just the tiller info. The rudder was haphazzardly replaced after the boat was knocked down and lost in heavy winds a while back.I thought I had access to the original, but that's not going to happen It would be great if you could provide me with as much info onthe whole unit,.. (tiller to rudder and hardware). I'm in the process or rebuilding this little gem, and from what I understand, it will be an effort woth it's while.

Thanks, Paul Camire

Paul, unfortunately I keep the boat in the water so getting the rudder/tiller out is difficult. I'll do my best to pull it out and at least send you some pictures. Speaking of pictures, I've got lots - check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/33992457@N08/sets/72157616670110021/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/33992457@N08/sets/72157616670352125/ (which includes pic of rudder/tiller) and http://www.flickr.com/photos/33992457@N08/sets/72157616762189704/

Arron, thanks for sending the links to the flicker site. The pictures help quite a bit. Once again nice job
