Pearson P33-2 Weymouth,
I currently own a 1987 P33-2 hull #109. I would like to move up and
I am looking at 1990 Pearson 38s. One is hull # 8 and I'm waiting to
hear on the other. Can anyone tell me how many hulls came out of the 38
mold? And anything else you can tell me about the 1990 or 91 38' I would
appreciate. I have seen the brochures and the CW review. It looks like a
very pretty boat.
Thanks

We have a 1991 (Built in 1990) P-38, hull # 14. I do know that 21 late 90's boats were made and that in 1998 (I think) an additional boat was made by the "new" Cal-Pearson group. We love the boat as it's a pretty fast sailor and handles nicely. We do not race but have done a lot of cruising. We took the boat to Maine once and did your vicinity (Salem/Boston) on another trip. We keep the boat in Connecticut but do most of our cruising east, next year we will be visiting Chatham. We did have one major issue in that we have had to replace the diesel. Supposition is that it was originally a lemon but who can say. Anyway we now have a 3jhe3 Yanmar that is 40 hp verses the older 3HM at 34 horses.

Pearson P33-2 Weymouth,
Thanks for the reply. I am interested in the 1990-91 edition of the 38'er. There are 2 currently for sale although one does not respond. The first was hull #8 but the second had clearly lighter use. Can you say if the hull is balsa cored below the waterline as I have read in another thread?

The Pearson 38 has a solid hull. The deck is cored. The only Pearson that I know of that had a cored hull was the 34 built in the early 80's.

You might also look at the P 36-2. It is the same hull as the P38, just one foot shorter as it does not have a swim platform. The LWL and beam are the same.

I agree with Dave, Pearsons generally don't have cored hulls; the P38 like the P36 and P37 are solid FRP. While the P36 is only a foot or more shorter than the P38, the swim platform and walk through transom are great, especially for these old bones. Additionally there are some other differences that were important to us, some asthetic and some functional. Our P38 also had some customization work done before the boat was purchased by the P.O. Either way the P38 and P36 are great boats.
