I'm looking for a 31-2, late 80's. A current owner tells me to expect wet decks but not to avoid the boats because of that.

Is this common? Comments?

I have a 1986 P36-2 that had wet decks.... sail track was the biggest culprit. Actually the p/o's were as they seem to have never rebed ANY deck hardware. Anyway, I got a great price on the boat and had the decks completely recored from above... cockpit to right before the foredeck. Big job but for me well worth it. Good luck!

Have had my 1989 Pearson 31-2 for a little over a year. Some moisture in the decks, but no more than you are going to find in most boats of the vintage, and not enough to compromise the structural integrity. Look for moisture in the rudder and sea hood as well. A trustworthy surveyor that's seen lots of similar boats and knows how you intend to use it will be invaluable.

Problem with Pearson is they used a gasket underneath the stanchions. Get that out of there... rout out core, epoxy, re-drill and bed with butal tape. Maine Sail has a great how to for this one. My 84 P303 only showed signs of moisture in the last stanchion before the pushpit (where water could sit... and not go down the scuppers). I'll work on my headsail tracks next... many, many holes... so little time.

Wow! You had all the decks removed and replaced?? Who did the work and what did it wind up costing you?

Well cost me about 8000 with me doing all the demo. In retro I would have been his monkey throughout the entire process to save a few dollars but more importantly be hands on doing the work. I feel I got a great price for the work and like I said it was offset by the cost of the boat. It is a great boat...

That's steep!! Can you send a photo of the finished product? Who did the work? I am always interested in the mechanics who do good work because there are so few that are worth the money.

Might be steep if you paid for a boat with dry decks. I got a great price. After the work was done I could have sold the boat and made money.... Actually due to the fact that both side deck core is no longer wood with solid glass under every stanchion, I still have retained significant value in the boat. I would do it again for the right boat at the right price. This boat was everything the wife and I want. Also we both enjoy working with our hands and find great pleasure making improvements.
