Pearson 303 New Bern
I bought last month a 1986 Pearson 303 with a Yanmar 2GM20F engine coupled to a Kanzaki Transmission (model KM2P0 ). I am concerned about the gear shifter. When I shift gears from neutral to reverse or forward, I do not feel a detent in the transmission (gear) lever which would be an indicator when the boat is either in or out of gear. Is this normal or is there a possible problem within the transmission?

Did you ever get an answer? Solve the problem? I just purchased a 303 with virtually no true inspection other than visual. The motor runs. That is truly all I can say about the boat. The shifter does not appear to move at all. Is there a trick to this? Is it supposed to feel as though it engages? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

What you should do is go down below and operate the shifter by hand, then check your cable.

Can't speak to your Kanzai transmission but my 323 with the MD11C did not have a real detent in either forward or reverse. As long as it doesn't slip out of gear you should be okay.

Re: the shifter that won't move, the suggestion about removing the cable at the engine is dead right. If the shifter doesn't move after that you either need a new cable or a can of PB Blaster.
