Hello Yanmar owners! The one thing I hate is when the engine doesn't start but it does turn-over great. For many reasons I'm told, air in line, bad filter, fuel lifter/pump and go's on and on. The worst part is to find out that the more you crank the chances are greater for water to backup and enter your engine. My engine starts usually on two strokes but some times it doesn't catch for 6 for some reason. However, I did notice carbon coming out the back exhaust. I was told the water bath filled up with sea water and that's was the cause and effect. Last year I decided to change out my elbow and inspect the design and came up with a solution. After cleaning out the exhaust system and re-installing a new elbow. I installed a ball-valve with lever (same dia. as hose) in between the output of the exchanger to the input elbow for raw water. Then I purchased a throttle cable used for lawn mowers and drilled a hole for the cable in the ball valve's pull lever. I made sure I measured the length of cable needed for easy access from my position at the helm. Now I pull the cable to shut the valve first! then after successfully starting the engine, I now push to let the water flow... What a comfort I feel knowing water cant back up into the engine!
Hope this helps you! Capt. Rob P303 #221
