Paul Palmer Lines aft on OD 25

Paul or anyone who can help,I am looking for the best way to lower and raise the mainsail without going up to the mast. Also, I would like to run the reefing system from the same area. I saw Paul Palmers photographs and was wondering how necessary the winch was. If anyone has experience in this area please send advice. Thank you and have fun! -David

Winch...

The winch is for controlling sail tightness, I assume. It isn't nessisary, unless you want to win some races. If you are just looking to put a cam cleat and some blocks to lead the lines aft you wouldn't have a problem without the winch.The problem I'm trying to figure out how to solve is to bring down the sail. If you release the halyard, it doesn't drop without help. I guess lazy jacks are the answer for that one...Josh

Lines aft on OD25

DavidIn my opinion the winch is necessary to get proper halyard tension on the main and jib to be able to tune the sails for different conditions. The extra friction on the halyard going through the turning blocks at the base of the mast, the deck organizer and the line clutch requires much more pull than is required to raise the sail at the mast. I had a small winch on the mast that I moved to the cabin top. Hope this helps. Any other questions let me know. It is a great improvement to have the lines run aft.Paul Palmer
