Which way does your P42 turn due to prop walk when backing out of the slip?

In reverse gear my prop walk is turning the stern to starboard - which is opposite what a RH prop should be doing!! I checked the shaft rotation when in forward gear from the engine room, and confirmed it rotates clockwise (viewed from the stern) - so it should be a RH prop

My 1991 h42 walks to port- always has. The only real way to avoid it is to take up slowly- which isn't always possible. Moving out of slip shouldn't be a problem as you can increase revs slowly.

thanks for the replies - two back to starboard as mine does and one backs to port. I assume engines are all Yanmar, but perhaps transmissions could be different. I'll continue digging!

I originally had the factory fitted 2 blade prop- changed to a 3 blade variprop- HUGE improvement! Plus 1>2knots and much easier to back - as long as I don't put revs on too fast!

I have a H376 and P-Walk isn't a big problem. Past boats... Yes. When in reverse I have always started my boat moving with a couple large throttle thrusts in reverse to get Her moving, then coast backwards in neutral. Prop walk is not an issue when I do it this way.

When I bought my H42, I read somewhere that the prop was RH so I assumed it would walk to port in reverse, and I planned my slip exit to account for that - but the boat didn't seem to cooperate! I finally checked the PW direction in reverse while tied to the slip and realized that the stern is actually moving to starboard. So now I am backing out to starboard into the channel, then putting into forward - and it is no problem. And coming into the slip I can take advantage of knowing PW direction.

I am just puzzled, because the reality doesn't match up with a RH prop characteristic! Hence my question to fellow H42 owners.

Eianm, your prop walk seems to be consistent with a RH prop, but mine and a few others are opposite direction -- don't know how to account for that, other than you appear to be in the southern hemisphere stuff rotates differently :D low pressure systems, bathtub drains, etc.

LOL- I think the fault might be in my brain! I was thinking walk to port as when I am at the wheel and I am facing forward, my stern is going to port as I reverse, BUT, if I face the stern I am of course walking to starboard- sorry for the confusion I caused! I was talking to a broker on our dock who actually worked at Hunter in the early '90s and I was asking what I was doing wrong when taking up reverse- he said that due to hull shape and the wing keel design as well as a large rudder, this was a small trade off with this boat, but he said , it also makes for a more secure boat in any heavier weather than similar sized boats because of these same elements .
