Parts from "Raymarine dealer" West Marine

This past spring, since my 4000 Mk 2 wheelpilot's belt was approaching the limits of its adjustment range (in its 5th season), I bought a spare drive belt at my nearby West Marine store in (Seabrook, NH) for the West Marine catalog price of $49.99.

My as-usual helpful salesman advised me that if I was willing to wait 2 weeks for their next Raymarine shipment, I could avoid Raymarine's obnoxious $40 "shipping and handling fee" they impose to discourage individual direct orders.

During this year's Maine cruise in September, the old belt became too stretched out to function and I happily (and easily) replaced it with my onboard spare.

Today I went back to the store to order another one to have as an onboard spare, but was "served" by the store manager (like a stallion "serves" a mare).

He informed me that he'd "have to get a quote for (me)" since "it wasn't an item (they) stocked." When I protested that I'd gotten one from his store at the catalog price in the spring, he said I "must have gotten special treatment, since it violated (his) store policy."

As John McCain says, "one shouldn't mud wrestle with a pig, since (a) you get dirty too, and (b) the pig enjoys it," so I went home and easily placed the order at westmarine.com.

Apparently this guy thinks being a Raymarine dealer doesn't obligate him to sell standard Raymarine items listed in the West Marine catalog, and can allow him to create "special order quotes" at his whim.

The one guy who works for him that knows what a sailboat is has been very helpful and gotten them/him some respectable revenues from me (such as $2k worth of Harken jib cars and control blocks earlier this season). I'm hesitant to cut off that guy's nose just to spite his "manager's" face, but I'll never make another purchase from that store manager.

That, however, leaves my appetite for payback unsatisfied. What would you guys do in this situation?

Based on the below, I'd call customer service and discuss it with them. They should know what he should have done in this situation. If you were able to obtain it online without the $40 charge it seems to me that he at minimum should have told you to order it online or that he could lump it in with his regular order like the other guy. I'd also ask customer service if the store is corporate owner or owned by an individual. In either case they should know if their manager isn't serving their needs.

Al,

Don't feel bad we lost Dan up here in Portland, who was a great WM store manager. Dan's replacement has the personality and willingness for customer service of a toad stool. While not a bad guy in general he has forced me to continue doing the majority of my business through Hamilton. In a small town like this with local competition you NEED the BEST customer service in order to survive. West apparently needs to do a better job of vetting candidates who are willing to treat their customers with respect and dignity.

Special order my arse... Hamilton would have ordered that part for me at my wholesale discount, no questions asked, and called me the minute it was in.

It's funny as a Port Supply customer I had a tough time spending the minimum required at PS this year because their prices are most often not even as competitive as Defenders regular Joe catalog prices..:doh:For the secrecy, hoops, business license and rigmarole they make you jump through to be a Port Supply customer you'd think it was at least a good deal..? Hamilton's street pricing regularly beats Port Supply as well..

I really hope they turn it around as they are a valuable resource..

Too bad

Sorry to hear your experience, and thanks for a very well presented topic.

Too bad you already bought your blocks there. Garhauer's less expensive! Now ya tell me.

But I doubt if the salesman gets paid based on what he sells, nor if the manager does. Why not have a nice professional talk with him? Or is he that dense...

I went through WM - withdrawal a few years ago when they went the cheapest manpower route and hired people who knew nothing about boats. At least now we have real time cruisers working there who know their stuff. Ace Hardware is my favorite boating store these days, mail order a bit, Garhauer for blocks.

I have no financial relationship with WM; I'm just a customer. I often buy from them, but not always. There are at least 4 WM stores within a 45 minute drive of my house, and typically all of them have helpful staff. Most are even knowledgeable, especially the one in Annapolis (not a surprise, is it?).

But you are right. Any business needs to attend to customer service. Especially in a price competitive market. Unfortunately, we all come across folks who just don't get it.

Good luck next time.

FWIW, the belt is a simple timing belt. AT5 750 075 is a part number that fits the 4000+

It is a timing belt that has a 5MM pitch, 750MM length and 7.5MM width

Callahan Bearing is one supplier that reportedly will ship them at a reasonable cost, it has been suggest to give George a call at 215-368-4000.

I'm not sure which was your first mistake. Going into West Marine or NOT checking right here at the SBO Chandlery. It appears you had to wait for shipment, just as you would have here. I KNOW that the people here are much nicer to deal with and the pricing is markedly better. They even asked me to return a pair of non-stock Harken blocks which I had ordered in error. I of course kept them because I knew I would find a home for them, which of course I did.

Support SBO and avoid Mal-de-West.

If you know the pitch, width, and length you can probably pick up an exact belt at your local friendly NAPA warehouse, and for less money.

West would be an absolute last resort for anything! They've gotten really bad, especially since Boaters World left the scene. They think they are the only game in town and can charge any price they desire.

You'll be glad to hear he found another job. WM's loss is the CVS in Cape Elizabeth's gain. He said the district manager for WM knows he made a mistake now but it doesn't sound like he'll be going back.

I don't understand why anyone uses West. Hamilton & Defender prices & service are great. I have seen items with a list price of $12, ~$9-10 net @ Hamilton or Defender, being sold @ West for $20.

I have two WM within 15 minutes from my boat. If I find I need something now, my default is WM. There are lots of time I need it now. I pay a premium and get what I pay for. If I have more time, I check this site first. Remember, it does not have to be listed on the Ships Store for them to get it. Go to Customer Service and request a quote.

I had a great experience with the West Palm Beach West Marine. I knocked my Raymarine wind indicator off my mast while passing under a bridge at high tide coming out of the St Lucie lock east bound. (my bad) Ordered another one thru my home West Marine and thought I was having it sent to the North Palm Beach West Marine, which is close to the North Lake Worth anchorage where everyone waits for a weather window to cross to the Bahama's. The part was instead shipped to the West Palm Beach store which is 8-10 miles away. "JOE" who works at the West Palm Beach store voluntered to drop it off at the North Palm Beach WM on his way to work the following morning. You can't get any better customer service than this.
