I am getting ready for a trip down to Key West in a couple weeks and have been giving my boat a complete going over. Naturally I found several things needing to be replaced or repaired. One was I had developed a leak in the head pumping assembley. Last year I replaced the gasket and "joker Valve" in the pump assembly but now I am leaking again. I found after removing the screws holding the casing that 2 of the spool like extrusions inside that the screws screw into were broken off. (too brittle I guess) I tried several things. I glued them back. did not hold. I drilled them out and replaced the screws with bolts,. Leaked worse than ever. Finally I went to WM to check out parts. The only part they had was the complete assembley, pump and all. This was great I thought until they priced it at $138.00 Then I checked the price of a new "Jobsco" head. With rebate and sale price it was 159.00 minus 35.00 off plus a $20 rebate. Before you all tell me to get a better head like the cricket etc, let me tell you I am one lazy person and It was so easy to take out 4 bolts and just pop out the old head and pop in the new one. So now I have anotehr "discount head". Anyhow, seems funny the parts are more than the whole unit. Makes me wonder if they will ever sell the 2 pump units on the shelf there.

price out a car

if you priced out the parts to rebuild a car you'd find out that the total would greatly exceed the cost of a new one. the same goes for almost anything you buy that has 'bits and pieces'. manufacturers make a great profit on selling new/replacement parts - it's a great profit center for them. and, what's worse, they've got you by the short hairs. you either pay the price or, as you correctly concluded, just toss it and get a new one. in the long run that will be the better deal - new vs fixed up.

Don't like those Jabscos

My Raritan phII just arived from defender. It was around $300 but is supposed to be far superior to the stock Jabsco. The Jabscos need to be re-built every 3-5 years and work marginally even when fully functioning. Whatever u choose to do...good luck!

Do yourself a Favor...

and replace that piece of junk jabsco with a Raritan PHII. I just did the replacement this year. You will actually save money in the long run because you won't have to replace the guts of the head every year, like you do with a jabsco. I can't understand why any company would put this piece of JUNK in a boat (new or used). The head has such a short life expectancy. The Raritan PHII is a simple install and the only major change is that you have to re-drill the bolt holes. Simply fill the old holes with Marine Tex and then drill the new holes for the Raritan. Because of the close area in the head I keep the handle out of the head until use.

I'm with you

I am with you on this. Instead of buying a repair kit save time and money by just replacing the whole thing every two or three years. Works for me.
