Paragon transmission

Mainsail.

I don't know if this is your area of expertise but I thought I'd ask. If not perhaps you could steer me in the right direction.

I'm rebuilding a Paragon 23L transmission. The engine gear (shaft that has the spline that enters the damper plate) moves forward and aft about 1/4". Is this for and aft play normal?

Everything is properly assembled, thrust washers in place, all bearings replaced and none of the gears appeared to have excessive play. The transmission was originally hard coupled (no damper) to the engine and had this play when I disassembled it. Just a gut feeling that something isn't right but I've never rebuilt a marine transmission before.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Never rebuilt a Paragon but 1/4" of movement on an input shaft does seem odd..

I feel the same way. It was originally coupled to the engine thru a bronze plate instead of a damper. It was pretty well frozen to the bronze and the splines we're beat up so I purchased a new engine gear/shaft. The amount of fore and aft movement is the same with the new and the old gear.

Any chance you know someone who might have an answer?

Thanks

Mike
