Recommended for ALL manual toilets
Regardless of what's in the Jabsco manual, pouring vegetable or mineral oil down the toilet puts an oil slick on the surface in the holding tank that increases odor problems.Besides, anything just poured down the toilet washes right back out again in just a few flushes...so trying to keep a toilet lubricated that way is a never-ending job..but highly profitable for the companies who make lubricating products that are just poured down the toilet. And waiting the toilet starts to squeak before lubricating it puts unnecessary wear on the seals...the toilet squeaks because it needs lubrication. It's kinda like waiting till the engine starts to smoke and then adding a little more oil. The right way to do it only needs to be done once a year:Buy a tube (TUBE, not the spray, not the liquid) of SuperLube--the same thick teflon grease that was in the pump when it left the factory. Close the intake seacock and pump the head enough times to get all the water of it. Take the top off the pump and put a healthy squirt into the pump...pump a few times to spread it all over the inside of the cylinder. Put the top back on, open the seacock again...you're done. Takes all of 15 minutes and lasts a full year. You toilet needs lubricating now...But for routine maintenance, the best time to do it is in the fall, as part of winterizing. The grease protects the rubber parts in the toilet from drying out and freezing, which makes 'em hard and brittle. In the spring, you're good to go again all season. And a single $3.95 tube of SuperLube should last you several years, which makes it LOT less expensive than anything you have pour down the toilet every week or two.
