does anybody have a clue why the coast guard goes to coordinated universal time when sending LOCAL distress messages? why not stick with a local 24 hour clock? even if a pan pan were to come from alabama i would find it a lot easier to adjust for the one hour difference in local time to georgia than do the double conversion. while i am at it: why does NOAA report storm pressures on its web sites in MB, but (usually) in inches on its radio weather channels. i woulb be happy with MB readings throughout (perhaps with inches given also for those who are not).

All SAR, CG and DND activities related to time are reduced to GMT. Often the call and coordination centers are in different time zones, as are search resources. This keeps everyone talking the same language. You will note that GPS units although giving a user friendly local time also give UTC time.
