Anybody else hit the rough weather on Sunday between Belhaven and the ditch? I was going up the Pamlico and it was pretty bad. Scared the admiral almost to death and didn't do the captain a lot of good either. After getting beaten pretty good for about 4 hours actually ran aground within site of the marina because the water had blown out of the river, threw out the anchor and spent the night aground, floated off about 6am Monday morning.

Yes it can be rough

Yes that can be a very bad stretch of water if the weather is right. Never run aground but always kept my draft to 4 feet or less in this area of the country. Pamlico and Albermarle sound can be rough but the worse beating I ever took was in the Croatan Sound. The water depth makes it worse than being off Cape Hatteras in a gale and that is no bull.

Have had the bejeesus beaten out of me

farther out at the mouth of the Pamilco River at the Sound. Heard other cruisers also report unexpected rough conditions there. Running the ICW south and making that run past Oriental is either the most beautiful or worst times you'll have. IMHO, it's worse that the dreaded Albemarle, but I've never hit that at the bad times....:)

Bay River to the Neuse

Hugh, I have to agree with Don..... the roughest trip I have had has been coming from Washington NC/McCotter's on Broad Creek going around to New Bern in early March. When entering the Bay River I had 35 kts on the bow and was pounding into the waves. I made the turn well past Maule's shoal and caught wind and waves on the port quarter. Boat was pitching, yawing and rolling all at the same time and kept it up for about two hours. I was very happy to slip into Oriental for the night. At other times the Neuse has been very pleasant, making for a laid-back day. Two weeks ago I single handed from NB to Oriental, got a short haulout at Sailcraft, changed the ball valves for the recall, cleaned and painted the bottom, and returned to NB. Three beautiful days of blue sky. Made it back to NB just before another front. Steve Hunter 38 Carolina
