I am going to look at a 1982 Cal 31 this weekend. It is located at a marina in the Oriental, NC area (not sure which one yet). Just looking for suggestions on good reasonable priced slip rentals in that area. Seems like a lot of them around there to chose from. If I do get a good deal I may want to move her depending on the slip rent.

River dunes. 5 star facility at 1 star rates.
Excellent hurricane protection, probably the best in the area

That place looks great. No yearly rates listed for their 35' slips. Bet it's more than a $150 a month :) Will call tomorrow. Surprised more NC sailors haven't chimed in yet. Just trying to save 5 days of vacation on hunting down a reasonable slip in that area.

Sailcraft Marina in Oriental, talk to Henry. A good place and more secure than others. You,LL find that the rates are all about the same in the area.

Kito, just for the maliciousness of it, I'm gonna pirate your post. I think it ran its course, and the folks that would know seem already to be here.
But I'm going to cruise into Beaufort this week, and just thought I'd ask if there's anything I "need" to know before coming into the area? Probably hit New Bern, and Oriental as well.
So if nothing else, you folks up there have had fair warning. Nothing serious, just the usual pillaging, looting, etc., you know, the classics..

(If this was in poor form, lemme know, I'll delete this).

And have coffee at "the Bean" Also bear in mind- the town dock at Oriental is a free dock for an overnight stay. Right across the street from The Bean too.

Free ... and almost always taken according to a fellow I was talking to in town. There's room for just one boat unless they expanded after the last hurricane that went thru town a few years ago.

Chris,
I am out of town and boat is hauled. You can use my slip in Beaufort if you want. It is slip #7 at the Pivers Island Marina. Just before the drawbridge take a left and go right along the fishing boats. Slip faces the north side of the marina. Should be a bunch of dock lines hanging off the pilings. I'll send my phone number on PM if you want to call.

Wow man, thanks all of you so far, truth is, I didn't expect much response to this seemingly typical short cruise question. I'm plotting now, in anticipation of spending tomorrow night in Wrightsville Beach, and early morning jumping outside. Full gear up, close hauled, 18 degree list.
Or motoring slowly...
the wind and weather dictating..

So if ya see myself, and the Slimey Limey in an old Cheoy Lee, floundered, orange smoke drifting, show some grace and throw a horseshoe.

The floating kind..

Done.

Well, with much apologies to Kito, I stole the thread, so I'll finish killing it, and put it to bed..

We didn't make it. (I typed that one sentence and had to look at it for five minutes). We started out fine, anchored right inside of Masonboro inlet for a quick jump outside in the light of day, and a "problem" was evident then, only I didn't realize it. The anchor light didn't work, but no biggee, a lot don't, so I hung a lantern from a halyard. Next morning we stretched out across Onslow Bay, and as I hoped, had every rag on the boat flying. I do this while Jon pilots, a usual arrangement. While I got her settled, he was checking out some things, and noticed the autopilot was not functioning. No real problem, boats have been travelling for years without them, and we were too. But it seemed to be a cascading event, as we started checking out other things, and they were dying as well. No running lights, bilge pump acting up, etc. While these problems are in itself not dire, discretion dictated that continuing on was foolhardy. Man. Back to Southport. I may could have rectified these issues underway, it simply wasn't required. This wasn't a delivery, and we had the time. We discussed putting her on the hill while returning, and in a week or so will do just that.

But after tying up was when I got the bomb. Jon's considering "retiring". Selling the boat proper, and going inland. He's 72 years old, and while I've long knew, (secretly of course), that my presence was as much my abilities as much as his friend, prudence has come to light. He no longer feels as if he can do it alone, and I suppose I understand that. He talked as if he might set her free while we talked about this, which actually amounted to him telling me his feelings while I listened. You have little idea how this news settles with me. And I didn't try and persuade him otherwise. Other than to lets haul and block it, and let the dust settle. And we will.

Old Cheoy Lee has got a great log. Alaska, Hawaii twice, countless islands, etc.

And while I'm mildly disappointed in the trip not going as planned, it really don't mean nuthin. At this moment I thought I'd write about it, and maybe that'll make me feel better. Maybe not. Damn what a baby, I'm very, very sad right this minute..

Hey Chris, sorry the trip didn't happen, but even more sorry to hear you may be losing your sailing buddy. Sounds like the boat and man have both had a good run. Keep your chin up and good luck!
